I am modding my wii now and is it really necessary to remove the brown ribbon cable? That is my biggest concern because it seems very fragile.

I am clipping with WiiKey 2. I would prefer not to remove it though, it kinda scares me that it might bust and I will lose essentially $250...

Its kinda awkward to hold the drive it one hand and clip it on with the other, But its possible, Ive done it. Just keep a steady hand and dont force it too hard it should clip on with just a little pressure.

And I know how you feel I was crapping myself when I had a wii open and disected on my table.

Everyone makes it look so easy, and it isn't too bad, but the fact that it is a lot of money (for a middle class like myself) makes it seem so hard. If it doesn't go on, I will probably have to disconnect it.

Yeah, it is easy, and its not. I mean I think its only so hard the first time because of your fear of breaking it. I dont think I would be nearly so scared installing another one.
