I've just bought myself a used 3ds with some games and downloaded stuff.
I would like to format it to new without loosing everything that was bought on it. Is that possible?
How does the eShop and Nintendo Club and stuff like that works? Is it tied to a username like PSN or to the system?

I guess you can just format it normally.
Then go on the eShop and go to your downloads (which is stored online, not on your 3DS), and just redownload all the games.
Not 100% sure though.

Your downloads are connected to your club Nintendo account. You can format your 3DS without worrying. When completed simply go to the eShop and go to settings. In settings click on "Title you have downloaded". You can re-download the stuff you want.

I've just formatted it and went and downloaded the apps again. Everything is working.
What I don't know is, does the shop has an username and password? I don't want to buy something on the shop and then have the previous owner "reclaim" his account on a new 3ds and lose those.
Is it better to just create a new one or is it tied in some way to the 3DS?

Tis tied to the system.
That's why the promise of accounts for NIntendo Network is a very good thing

Hi, I always wanted to ask this question, so thank you for making this thread :)

Anyone able to advise how the same method affects the system if it is an ambassador set? I would like to keep the ambassador status and games while formatting it.

What I have done so far is simply modified the original owner's Mii to reflect my looks and name. I also removed his linkage to his club nintendo account.

if the previous owner claimed them then you cannot as they will be tied to his account
if they have not been claimed then you can claim them

Why not just de-activate their Club Nintendo account from the E-shop and remove payment details if any. What difference does it make, it'll be like new and you'll keep the games. Just edit your name in the settings etc...

Formatting will just wipe the whole data out and the tickets of those already downloaded games.

Edit: Nevermind seems like you already formatted

Formatting doesn't wipe out the download list in the Eshop.

Bought my girlfriend a 3DS over the weekend, and while playing with it to try to figure out something with Streetpass, I formatted that unit 6 times. When I got home and decided to check the Eshop, it had some credit and a few games registered to it.

What annoyed me was how the transfers work between 3DS units. Would have taken those games for one of mine. Don't feel like losing what mine have on them, though.

Thanks for replying.
The previous owner gave his ambassador games to me and didn't migrate the game/ambassador certificate (he bought a new japanese set). Also got Zelda 4 Swords too :D
So I still have the games and the certificate on the system. I haven't formatted the system, but did remove his Club Nintendo link in the eshop settings. His balance credits and purchases were still in the system and I was able to re-download the ambassador games when they were updated.

So...do I take this to mean that the ambassador games are tied to the system? Also if I were to format the system, will this still affect the ambassador games?
