Hardware Bluetooth dongle problem

I have a known working Bluetooth dongle that works fine under Vista 64-bit. I moved it to a different computer (a recent build of mine), plugged it in to a known working port, and started up Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit. It doesn't recognize the dongle. System > Preferences > Bluetooth says that I don't have an adapter plugged in. In Synaptic, the Bluetooth package is installed. Can someone help?

Yeah... I kinda had it working under Windows already.

I just need it to work under Ubuntu.

Sorry it's not helpful, but it's the truth.
I have a bluetooth keyboard/mouse combo (Logitech MX1000 keyboard, MX5000 mouse) that is detected as one item under Linux, so I can either configure the keyboard to work properly or the mouse to work properly but not both. Tried it under a few diff builds of Linux (Ubuntu/Kubuntu, Fedora, and one other) mid 2010.
The only way it works properly is under a virtual machine.

I should add that in addition to very basic support for bluetooth devices, support for dongles is worse. If it's not a major (i.e. common) bluetooth dongle, it's not going to work.

Well, is mine common? I can go to my local Wal-Mart and get it. Same thing with Best Buy.

It's depending on the chip used inside.
Given that it's a 'mini' dongle or whatever they call it, and uses Bluetooth 2.0, my guess is it's not common (at this time) and most likely something "new"-ish.
It could be a common dongle for the 2.0/mini dongles so support could be added later on... but your best bet would be to ask on the Ubuntu boards -- though I wouldn't expect too much useful help.
You'll most likely be told to follow some old, outdated instructions that no longer work with current (read: within the past 2 years) versions of Ubuntu. And when the instructions don't work because something has changed in the way Ubutntu handles things, you'll be told the problem is 'just you'.

OK... Although I remember dreaming about getting that adapter 2 years ago, and Bluetooth is currently at 4.0.
