I have been having issues with my 3ds. I updated my hacked 3ds to 11.8 not so long ago, and no immediate issues arose.
It wasn't until recently when there only appears a black screen when I turn on my 3ds. When I try without an sd card, it gives me the error message, "failed to apply 1 firm patch".

So then I tried looking online for similar problems from others, and I assumed it was probably because I needed to update my Luma and to update to safebs9installer.
and so I followed the guide from this link: https://3ds.hacks.guide/a9lh-to-b9s.html

However; I think there is a problem when it comes to "section II: installing boot9strap". It goes straight to Godmode9 when I boot with the start button.
I have no idea whats going wrong. When I try skipping this step, the problem persists, and I still get a black screen, (now even when I remove my sd card; no more error message, just a black screen as well).

Whats am I doing wrong or missing from this guide? Is this guide even the solution, or is it something else?
I see lots of similar questions like this asked here, but none that I have seen have worked for me yet.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

The issue is that 11.8 requires v9.1 luma file. If yours is 7.0.5 then your gonna have to use ntrboot to get it back. If its over 7.1 but under 9.1 you will need to grab that file and set it on sd root.

Are you sure you're running A9LH? Is the arm9loaderhax.bin file in your SD card root?

Delete it, copy SafeB9SInstaller.bin to the SD card, rename it as arm9loaderhax_si.bin and power on the console, see if the installer launches

I did that. I copied the safebs9installer.bin, renamed it arm9loaderhax_si.bin, and placed it in my sd root; but when I boot with start, it goes to Godmode9 instead of the installer.

Mhh... I don't know if it's possible, since I don't remember much about GM9 back in the A9LH days, but..
Since you can only boot in GM9, while you're there, go into the SD card, go to where SafeB9SInstaller is, highlight it, and press A. Does it give an option to boot it?

No, I can't boot it. It lets me boots .firm files, so I got the safebs9installer.firm from the .zip file provided, and I booted that.
It actually worked, and it did everything, but when I had to press A on the final step to reboot, it instead went to the black screen like before, instead of going to the Luma screen.

Is it something else causing my issue, or am I missing something?

Ok, you've finally installed B9S. Follow the A9LH to B9S guide again, but skip the "Installing boot9strap" section

I tried it again already, but the problem still persists.
If I skip the boot9strap section, then I still can't progress, because I can't boot my 3ds home menu. The black screen still shows.

Wow! Finally!

It turns out the update probably prevented the console from booting if it detected a flashcart. I had my R4i 3ds one on the console the whole time (I always did).
Once I removed it, it worked like normal.

Not sure how exactly it did so, but at least I can finally use it again.

Thanks a lot!
Sometimes defective or corrupt flashcarts can cause a black screen on boot or, if inserted while on the home screen, cause the console to freeze. Honestly, I should've thought of it before :/

I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
