sorry for being such a n00b but there's no one to teach me.
The way I learned was by first understanding the basics of using my PCs, using books (as much as I hate to admit it the for Dummies Books were really good starting texts, at least they were back in the early 90s) and then when I mastered that and got interested I could start reading directions for more advanced things (I will say that rather than pirating though, it was mostly to get nocd cracks on games I had already bought, like X-Wing A). It's called a library, use it. If you had done that I promise you'd know what compressed files and executables are.

Because people assume you've learned the basics about how to use your PC. Most of that stuff comes with directions and if you ever have a file extension you don't know you can always google it and get dozens of results.
