And torrents aren't slow if you use the right trackers. Checkout my sig. And if I had a faster wireless network card, it prolly would say 4.0 MB.

Ok, let me tell a little story about my Internet. For the interest of getting to the point, I'll skip the part with 56k dialup.

My parents signed up to PlusNet Broadband for £11 a month many years ago. It gives me unlimited bandwidth, 8Mb download speed, and 448kb upload speed. At the time, my telephone exchange supported 8Mb downloads and 2Mb uploads. My ISP limited uploads because the only people who needs high uploads are premium residential users or business users.

Now, I have the option to upgrade to 20Mb downloads and 8Mb uploads, although my telephone exchange only supports 14Mb downloads and 6Mb uploads. But that would cost me £15 a month and I would have to start tolerating a 60GB bandwidth limit (during peak times). Does not want (since I frequently go over 300GB downloads a month).

Note that I'm in Britain. It's different in America, but not that different. The basic line is speed depends on ISP, telephone exchange, router, and finally your software (e.g torrent program).

Now for torrents. I've read 2 different myths to increase your download speeds. Neither hold water. The first is to increase the limit for half-open connections per download. This means you connect to more people at once. That doesn't mean a thing if they've not got high upload speeds (like most, including me). What it will actually do is flood your router and make it more likely that cheap routers will crash and have to reset (either automatically like my router or manually if it's really cheap), which ultimately slows things down. The second myth is lowering your upload speed cap. Whilst at does mean more connections can be directed at downloading instead of uploading, many of the power up loaders use scripts to ignore the people who have upload caps on. That and it doesn't slow me down at all if I set the cap at 40kbs or 100kbs (it can only use 60 anyway).

Best way to download torrents faster - pick your source torrents better. Torrents with lots of seeds (especially on private trackers) and not so many leachers will give fast downloads. Torrents with two or three times as many leachers as seeds will be slower. Torrents with less than 10 seeds are likely to be very slow. Just wise up about how torrents work and you won't have to complain.

One last thing, why in the name of little pink bunnies do you have to stay at your laptop to torrent? Ever heard of leaving a torrent to run overnight? You just start it, put your laptop away, and do something else. Like play Xbox/PS3/Wii/DS. And if you're only complaining that it takes days to torrent... Ever considered direct downloads? Nearly everything I used to use torrents to find can now be easier found on DDL sites (like Megaupload). And it's usually faster too.
EDIT: btw, this post in in response to the first post. Everything after that which I read only seems like troll baiting to me. Seriously, why did nobody see that he just doesnt understand how the Internet works, and try to explain at least the most basic concepts rather than jump to the end point of everything?

Torrents suck big time. A while back, I downloaded files I shouldn't have downloaded but have long since stopped. The reason I no longer use bittorrent is due to fact people found out about it and, well, had a talking to..On top of that, they can contain trojans/worms and jack up the data on your computer. Not worth it at all. If you don't want to get caught, use a VPN or usenet.

trojans/worms/etc would be dependant on what you download and where and I don't even know what you mean by 'jack up your data'
been using torrents for almost 8 years now and that has never happened, ever

Moral of the story : don't follow random tutorial on the net.
Everybody is different and has a different setup.
