Beetle mates with beer bottle

It’s lust in the dust, gone lethal — a messy, tawdry, true tale of the terrible fate of certain lovelorn males when they mess with beer bottles.

Sure, these males are not-particularly-bright Australian jewel beetles (Julodimorpha bakewelli), which were observed trying to copulate in the desert with brown stubby beer bottles, but there are lessons to be learned from this mismatched mating attempt and its, er, tragic outcome, says the University of Toronto Mississauga biology professor who wrote a scientific paper about what he saw.

So crazed with lust were the besotted beetles that they would not leave the bottles, even when the hot sun fried some of them to death or — worse still — when ants attacked and started biting the beetles’ genitalia.
