Homebrew Been in a box for 2 years. Suggestions?

Hi all. Just a quick advice question. I bought 2 release day Black WiiU systems a while ago that had current firmware at the time I believe. I moved when a bought a new house a couple of years ago and just recently rediscovered the box that the systems were in. I'd love it to be setup with homebrew to play my backups from a USB drive like my old Wii did for the kids. Firmware would be whatever was current for Mid-August 2015.
What would be my best approach for this?

See if you can boot it up without connecting to the internet (i.e. unplug router and don't plug it back in until after all wifi connections on the console have been deleted). Then see if the FW version you have is 5.3.2 something a little after, because if it is the process for hacking will be a little bit more straightforward
