If I were to load the backup loader from my SD card, after a game is booted, can I remove the SD card while playing? Sorry for the noobish question, I don't want to screw anything up.

Try it! I assume it will crash after a short period of time, as you can play a game after a disc has been ejected but it will keel over after a few seconds.
