An April Fools virus, perhaps not. However, April Fools is one day where malware makers strike the most. According to CBC News, there is one worm that's gonna be circulating around the most - The Conficker worm. Further research shows that the worm hides in your computer, turns your AV off... and does nothing. However, it creates a virtual private network with other computers infected with the Conficker worm. This means that all the information you put in your computer - your credit card information, banking info, etc, will be shared with other computers in the "Conficker Network" and will eventually get around to the maker of said network who can then do anything s/he wants with it.

Conficker is WAY over-hyped.

I mean WAY.
Where is your proof to back up that claim? Please do tell us why you believe it's way over-hyped.

I too believe it is over hyped. All I've been hearing in school all day is "DID YOU HEAR ABOUT CONFICKER!?!! OMG ITZ GUNNA GET MY COMPUTER." We watched it on the news in one class. Its just a virus. Theirs millions of them around the internet. Big deal.

WAHHH IM SCARED NOW! wat do i do?! now u made me paranoid =(
simple. just abstain from watchin pr0n for a few days, and use ur personal stash! (or storage)

o and assume the fetal position in the corner of your room.

but seriously, it's a virus. don't do anything stupid, have a decent av (such as nod32, bitdefender, kaspersky, or avast pro), and u'll be fine.

I think people are getting too scared. Just go on your regular sites.... so long as you regular sites aren't random porn sites.

Just to be safe today I installed Ubuntu, did a whole virus scan with AVG, Avira, Avast, etc., used a conficker removal tool, and updated my PC.

Didn't find anything of interest, but better be safe than sorry.

And If it is an april fools joke, I can still laugh.

First time I am glad to own a Mac.

Ok, now you all are going over the top. Yes it's a deadly worm. Yes it can do damage. But if you watch which websites you go to you'll be perfectly safe. Just don't go to strange websites. Stick with your most common sites (Facebook, YouTube, GBAtemp, and DSDatabase for me) for a little while until the worm scare has died down and you'll be fine. If the most popular AV companies like avast! and Norton haven't added it yet, the Conficker signature will be loaded into their signatures within a week tops. After that, you'll have nothing to worry about.
