So will this install on my 'MC' 8gb touch or not?

No.... it's not a 4G model. Sorry. =(

Great! Left behind already, I don't think I've had the thing a year yet. It's like the classic all over again

I am in the same boat as you, buddy.

On the bright side, At least you have better App compatibility than me still.

Impressive.

I don't think it passed Acid3 before.

That's indeed pretty damn impressive, thanks for the heads-up. Are there any other mobile browsers out there that can pass the Acid3 test?
blackberry also has a perfect score

but acid3's testing method is more of a joke then anything so dont take it srly (ex: testing features that are almost never used)

All part of web standards and compliance really.
Even if such features don't get used, in the event they do for specific web applications it's important that they're done right.

All these people that are moaning about the lack of compatibility have to remember this is Apple we're talking about. They are well known for making every effort for you to buy entire new units of their products instead of allowing you to upgrade them. ie. dropping support for old iphones/ipods, not allowing the 18 month life battery in ipods to be replaced, soldering and caging RAM and processors in their computers, dropping application compatibility between MacOS 9 and X, dropping support for the PowerPC processor, dropping support for many of their core apps with older incremental updates to MacOS X

Then my 3rd Generation iPod was left out?
ohnoes.png
3rd Gen 8GB iPods are actually cunningly disguised 2nd Gen 8GB iPods. Apple were arses and only updated the bootROM on them to close exploits.
So basically: If it IS a 3rd Gen (i.e. 32/64GB) then it isn't.

Also Schlupi so you're saying that we should all still be using the original iPod Touch hardware to maintain compatibility? No Infinity Blade? No high res screens? Its called progress. Apple waited a few years before cutting support, they've cut the 2nd Gens a LOT quicker.

I am not saying they shouldn't update their product.

I am just saying they should consider those who have their old hardware, and still want to do SOME of the features that they can.

I don't expect my 1g iPod Touch to scan barcodes or run the LATEST crazy features the newer models support. I just want better compatibilty with Apps that should really have no problem working on the 1g.

If MineCraft is released and not working on the 1st Gen I will Flip Shit.
But a 1G iPod Touch probably couldn't handle any of what iOS 4 has to offer. More than likely you wouldn't be even able to run Minecraft on a 1G, not just because of not receiving iOS 4 but the fact that the hardware can't handle it what so ever since that 1st Generation of iPod Touches were brought out 4 years ago

>=( I am still really pissed they stopped updating 1st gen iPod Touches...
1g was killed back with iOS 3.1.3

this updates doesnt work on ipod touch 2g and iphone 3g

I know. That is why I am upset. >=(

I WILL NOT update my iPod JUST to get an update... The old ones SHOULD be compatible. Imagine if the DSes bought in 2009 won't play newer games, or the new Pokemon Games. People would RAGE.

"Buy an updated DS" Nintendo would say, and they would be hated. Apple does this shit and gets away with it.

I HATE Apple.
Doesn't Nintendo kinda do the same though? They support the DS for a bit and Apple supports the older iPods but then they upgrade. So now we get the DSi and it has all of these other amazing features that the DS doesn't. The next iPod does the same and gets better features and whatever else but it still supports previous stuff (like how the DSi still plays DS games but also has all of these DSi enhanced and exclusive stuff and the new iPod is capable of previous things and more).

It's a matter of keeping up if you have the money for it from what I can see. You can buy the update and it does nothing new for your older product and you can buy DSi enhanced games for your older DS but in a way it won't be doing anything your DS or DSlite isn't already capable of.

2nd gen is getting killed by iOS 4.0, it obliterates my battery in a day or two and I never have background applications running when I am listening to music. My battery life was cut in half when I was forced to update to 4.0

I thought it was just me...iOS 4 is whats killing my battery life? What a relief...

4.3 returns the screen rotation lock button. Thank god for that. It tells you something about Apple when you're pleased with them for returning a feature that you already had before.

turn off wi-fi, turn off push notifications
your battery life should return back to normal, mine did anyway

I feel for you, but what does the update provide that would even help you on an original iPod? If they're not relevant and won't change anything then what's the point? It seems more akin to saying that DSi updates should be available for the classic DS.
