In that case get a N3DS(XL) any one you want and hit up @hundshamer for a nand mod for roughly 50$ to future proof the console and get arm9loaderhax which will be the new standard soon.

Here's what I was thinking. Price of 3DS ($190 after sales tax new at Gamestop at the moment)+ mod ($50) + shipping ($7) + convenience fee ($5). Right now it would be $252 shipped. Well that would be just a guess right now.

It's really safe to downgrade from below 10.2, that is just false. I downgraded one 3DS at 9.4, and another at 9.8 with no issues.

I'm sure hardbrick's impossible if you use corresponding cia pack, as it does safe firm then native firm, amirite?

There's also some guide floating around that uses and links to a really old version of sysupdater, this version actually hardbricks if it fails during the process, not sure why OP didn't update his link. Julian's build is the best one for safe downgrades.

which one is? I'm waiting for a N3DS to arrive today, and don't want a beautiful new brick of $200 in my desk, and want to avoid a hard-mode

Isn't there a way to unbrick without a NAND backup? Requires a hardmod though.

not without sending it to nintendo, or planning to just use it as a paperweight.

So, the mod itself is $50? $7 of shipping if is from U.S. and the $5 dollars of fee?

From what it sounds like I may have used an old version of sysupdater. I had a few SD cards (I had an issue with browserhax and thought maybe my sd card was the culprit.) I think I had an old sysupdater on one of them......sad for me.

I checked the CIA twice against MD5
