If they didn't have the raised edges, then the buttons might possibly collide with the top screen, which might be worse. Even the two screens might collide. The only other option would be to put raised borders on the OUTSIDE of the system, but that might be uncomfy to hold.I know, right? Either that, or why doesn't nintendo just get rid of the whole raised bottom screen thing? Wouldn't that save some tears cried over scratched screens? Meh. I dunno, I guess it would be just a money saver for them to just keep things the way they are.
Honestly, Nintendo should have just had the bottom screen as big as the top one. then they could still do the raised borders and not have to worry about it. I know it's a bit early to think about, but I'm hoping that the 3DS's next gen successor learns from this mistake.
