Java has a license - the Android team (allegedly, I have no idea) used it against the license.

1) The topic of the article linked in the OP is fucking retarded (I didn't read the article due to how inaccurate the title was, typical hype-driving blogspam shit.

2) There is no possible way this lawsuit could "destroy" Android or the concept of open source. Anyone who thinks that's even a possible outcome knows absolutely nothing.

3) Whoever at Google approved the release of android without proper licensing took the chance that Sun wouldn't sue. When Oracle bought Sun, that changed the game and it's Google's own fault for not licensing the Java VM at that point.

Summary: Google will have to pay some retribution due to their own poor decision.

Oracle is practically basing their (as you call it) "legitimate claim" on a legal loophole in GPLv2. The Android stuff and Dalvik was created from J2SE, which is supposedly free and open source, and not J2ME, which requires licensing fees. Oracle just wants a cut of Android's success that it does not deserve.

This is not a copyright infringement claim at all, Oracle is trying to collect on some ludicrous software patents. Propel adoption of Java using the GPL, then collect from it later.

I am disappointed in Google. In my opinion this will affect them entirely on a professional level. This is just something that is unprofessional because of the way it was handled. Before you release your product make sure everything is ready to go with it. As we can see one little opening leaves consequences.
