What I did was first clean my lens and then I used the first video of the SSBB adventure mode as a sort of benchmark for DVD9 DL+R,
and used MySims for a DVD5+R benchmark. (MySims thrashes the drive quite a bit and you can see lag when the disc isn't being read
properly)

I ran the Wii open and adjusted the laser unit as little as possible and retested, I got the best result about 1/12th-1/8th of a turn counter
clockwise from starting position. I can't stress enough not to move to far because once you get too far either way you might have some
discs work great, and others will give a DRE right away.

Hope this helps those of you trying to clean or adjust your laser.

Also the red arrow is there to show where the bottom part of the drive with the tabs is located in relative location to the image.

This is just a picture with the tape off showing you what's underneath.

I used a very small jewler's flat blade screwdriver, I believe the size was 1/32nd" but I'm not 100% sure.

I had trouble using a phillips screwdriver to adjust it so I tried the flat blade and it worked great.

Ouch......... Did you try to remove that cable without unlatching the brown clip holding it in place? No good, and really you don't even need to unhook it to adjust the laser or clean it.

Looks like it's time to search eBay or the web for a replacement laser unit....

oh and just to let you know....the thingy you twist to adjust the laser isnt always in that position that was posted in the pictures. In my wii it was on completly the other side...

i hardly touched it, it just tore off, i didnt yank it or anything. I'm so pissed off today. First i accidently knock the wires of the modchip and now this! The modchip was easily fixable but i dont know about this....grr what a fucking waste. Stupid smash bros.

i adjusted the pot to 534, and it was working great for a while, then after about two hours of gameplay, i got a can not read error. Is this because my burn is bad? it happened like this after my first pot adjustment and lens cleaning. Also, i sort of cleaned the lens with vodka... should i do it with alcohol instead? I remember reading something about burning on slow speeds is bad for fast burnable media. Im also using the pioneer dvd burner i use to burn my 360 games. Should i try a different burner or what?
Edit Note: It also seems if i eject the disk and put it back it continues sometimes. Other times i just let it sit at the error screen for a few minutes and insert it back in. I even tried swapping disks between one with a designated break, and one without there doesnt seem to be a difference

hmm...
a question to the pros here...
i've updated wiikey to 1.9g and firmware to 3.2j to play SSBB ntsc-u...
after the update, the wii channel showed the pic of the game, when i run it - it locks up.
after i plugged off the wii to restart it stopped reading all my backups...
originals hardly load in channel, and get stuck when i try to play them...
it that a lens problem?

Tip for the guys who have tweaked up the pot, remember to set the drive speed back to x6 if you have changed down to x3 previously.

wow this is awesome, i've been playing sse all day and i was constantly getting DRE's but I would just take the disc out and put it back in to fix it, or reset. it was happening on almost every video once I passed a certain percentage completed (~50%), so I started skipping the videos and stuff but then it got to the point where I wasn't even able to just skip the videos. So I had remembered people talking about this a month ago with the Japanese release (wish I would have done this for that release but oh well), and thought "eh, what the heck".

Well I turned it barely any at all counter clockwise and went back and was able to watch every one of the videos I had missed without a problem. Seems like it fixed it. just played for about an hour i guess. Now it's time to put the wii back together (I was testing it with the case still off in case I needed to adjust it more but got it on my first try

. Thanks a bunch to everybody that figured this out.

I'm getting the green screen very often when I boot up the game and it starts to play the opening movie. If I start swapping discs then I can usually get past that and to the main menu. I don't seem to have a problem when I play brawl matches but if I go to SSE and beat the first mission(kirby vs mario) it ALWAYS gives me a cannot read disc error or the screen goes black and I have to hard power off my wii. Btw I burned the game on verbatim dvd+r dl using two different programs with and without the break, none of them seemed to work any better. So i figured it was the laser since it craps out on me during SSE(I think thats on the second layer). I got my wii open and to the part where I can adjust the pot, but I don't have a small enough screwdriver to turn it. I'll probably pick one up tomorrow.

And for those of you have cleaned your lasers, what all do i need? Just a special cloth and solution?

My Wii will not read any disc I have adjusted it ever so slightly each direction with power off, I removed the shield so as to get to the pot easier. Has anyone adjusted a pot with power on while it wasn't reading to get it to work?
