I'm wondering about the policy Microsoft will have with universal apps on the xbone store, specifically if we'll be able to have emulators, media players...etc and if Microsoft will finally enable devkit options for everyone.

I think that'd be a great move for Microsoft to do so, Sony would be stunned and that'd be a new age for console gaming imo.

but I think they're kind of afraid to do so for some piracy reasons or don't know what, so yeah basically this thread is here to try to clear this out and gather as much info as possible on this topic.

Yeah that's the general summary of microsoft.

Nah seriously, I see a big dilemna in their talks about this as they're never really clear about what'll be allowed or not on the xbone and that's really annoying, but if we'd be allowed emulators, media players...etc and devkits options available to anyone, I'd not hesitate and buy an xbone asap.

They say they'll regulate apps but they never say on which criterias and that's what I find annoying...

If the xbone had a file manager just like windows phone has and an access to most of the windows phone & windows 8 apps (maybe they'll just regulate the crappy apps like fake apps or such...), that'd make it a really cool device to get.

Just think for a second, do you honestly expect Microsoft/Nintendo/Sony to ever put something like that on their consoles? Of course not.

It would be cool nevertheless to see an MKV media player on PS4/XO as well as emulators but it's just not going to happen on official firmwares.

there are emulators on the windows 8 store, but nobody uses that...
emulators might get through on the xbox one store but if they do they'll probably take them down asap.

Why not ? If all the securities are here to avoid potential bypasses(and I'm sure their universal app execution environment is secure enough), I don't see a reason why they wouldn't agree on that...

To me, that'd be the best move to do against the PS4 as Sony is clearly not aiming this way about what'll be available on their console.

you don't know how stuff work? if microsoft gives you this option, sony probably will announce\release the same thing next day...
