This is rubbish, its unfair to those who don't want to update the firmware at all. Being forced to jump through hoops just to play 1 game is wrong.

Its like going to buy a burger but you have to answer a 100 question quiz before you eat that burger otherwise you can't eat it nor get your money back.

You may not like it, but it isn't wrong. It happens everywhere, even non software related thing. When you bought the 3DS, you didn't buy the software. If xxx game doesn't work because of xxx firmware on 3ds, i think it would fall more into the software instead of Nintendo, if you're even able to pull of some legality crap.

I heard something about Nintendo planning on having firmware updates stored of 3DS gamecards and that if you don't update you can't play the game.

But, I mean, isn't that sort of illegal. You already bought your game and now Nintendo is more or less forcing you to update your 3DS.

Please explain/elaborate.

every other system does it, the wii does it, ps3, & 360 does it, just because its a handheld doent change anything. there finally makign there handhelds console like.
& im glad there doind there part & keeping things pyrat & hacker free. less hackers on our wifi games.

edit:not to mention that iphones, ipod touches, ipads, now have to stay updated to use some apps, games, ect.
same with some android apps, games, ect.

edit2: the most likely reason they put firmware updates on games is for people without internet that were unable to update.
i may need one of these games if i dont get internet soon. tethering from 2g sucks. :/

So for those who can't connect to update their 3DS is meant to suffer?

I wonder if game FW updates are a good idea. Wouldn't that open up a new attack vector for a cfw exploit? To me, it would be safer for Nintendo to have wifi updates only. History has shown wifi is harder to hack. Right?

If it's Wi-Fi only, what happens to the games that need an update to work and to the people who don't have Wi-Fi access 24/7?

I guess they simply wouldn't require games to have the updates to play. There's no hard rule that physical games have have certain firmware versions to play. They could hope that the incentive to go online with their system will be enough to keep systems updated and hack-free.

If the system is hacked, then it would be a good idea to begin requiring FW updates for games, though.

Maybe the gamecard firmware updates are required to use certain features of the 3DS that are otherwise inaccessible.
Like maybe for example in MGS there is a special street pass feature that needs an update to be used

Ever been to KFC? I'm always asked like 4 questions after I place my order.
So while 100 is unrealistic, 3 or 4 are asked usually.

Not really. See: Encryption.

It's not a legal issue, it's a consumer choice.
If you want to play mario, you can't buy a ps3 and complain to nintendo that your wii disc doesn't work.
If you want to play mario 3ds and it has an update you don't have installed, you can either install the update and play it, or bring it back without installing the update and never play it.

exactly my point!

'Cause it really that hard to update from wifi or game card so a game can run.
Some games probably need a update to run and not just there to make you update.

The only reason not to update, well most likely, is you are waiting for a hack.

people who can hack, it wouldn't matter if it's wifi or from software. if it's from wifi, they just find where the source is and download it on their pc...that's it, in fact, it's probably easier than trying to crack the software

Seriously? People STILL think that being forced to update via a game is illegal!?

Get over it! As some members on Page 1 said, the PSP, 360, PS3 and Wii have been doing it for ages!

Oh yea it's so unfair to work against piracy to keep game development going for as long as possible on the heads of us poor mistreated players, getting improvements without any downside besides maybe being unable to play illegal software... gamers' lifes aren't easy...
I just wish they'd stop doing this so we can easily pirate all the shovelware instead of having some great games that cost money

My argument is based on convenience not piracy.

When I buy a game I want to be able to play it without needing to find a WiFi spot and then wait for it to download the firmware on all the cards I own, now for those who don't have WiFi at home then its an inconvenience but if the rumor is true then nintendo will ignore that and continue with it while saying "screw you" to the people who do buy but don't have WiFi.

I only pirate games if I have a good reason to, I want to pirate SMT: DSO why? because I don't want to listen to those stupid dub voices. Will I pirate LoZ:OoT, DoAD etc? no because I actually enjoy the game and will be happy to buy it but thats me.

Why would you need to search for a Wifi spot? The thread is about storing the updates on the Card like they do it on the Wii.
You won't have to download anything as it will be on the cartridge its just going to install and thats it, they have it on Wii and PS3 already, don't know about Xbox.
If I remember right that is, haven't used both for a long time now.

I honestly do not think that Nintendo is stupid enough to force people to go on search for open Wifi spots, they are aware that the DS3 isn't such a big seller at the moment and they won't risk to lose even more people with such a move.

By the vagueness of the first post I assume you needed to go and search for a WiFi spot thus my objections to it in the first place. I find that this will only delay pirating at most and nothing more.

Some times the game needs the update to run.

Example: With the Wii Speak, games that used it required 4.0 and up.
Games don't run "under" the system menu. As long as you have updated the IOS it uses, you can run it. There is no need to update the System Menu.

No need to even go to the opening post. The thread title is "About apparent firmware update via gamecards"

That aside, delaying piracy is EXACTLY what those firmware requirements are about on every console. And delayed piracy means more sales of legit games, which means more income for publishers, which means more games with a bigger budget. This way everyone wins. I think I can live with the few minutes it needs every half year if it gets me more quality playtime and less games with a good idea but not enough budget to make the game fun.

Example: With the Wii Speak, games that used it required 4.0 and up.

Yes, if you have softmodded your Wii. With a modded console you get around a lot. But that's not the point here
