my R4 only comes up with the chines version of the kernel and when I put the english version on it there comes an error message in chinees

It's a very old problem.

You bought a Chinese R4.

All is not lost. On the very first generation of R4s you could solder a point to make it accept the english firmware on a Chinese DS. I'm assuming you have a later model though so I doubt you'll be able to do that. I'm pretty sure I remember that you can get hacked firmware which will work and give you English language interface on your Chinese R4 however (this is just off the top of my head so someone correct me if I dreamt that)
