Is there anyway to play a link to the past in 3D I guessing not because I looked around? Just blows my mind that sega had some of their genesis game made in 3D, but nintendo didnt make any snes game in 3D.

what 3d games are you on about with the genesis lol literally sega barely made any 3d games they made about the same as nintendo at the time
they not even that impressive

beside if lttp ever did get a 3d remake we all know is would be dx remix style, the current game still holds up though

Sega had 3D on the Master System too, using crazy high speed shutter glasses. Space Harrier was awesome. But it's hardly a valid comparison to the 3DS.

Link Between Worlds :rofl2:
This is honestly a legit answer tbh, it's close enough to the same game mechanically but also uniquely takes advantage of 3D with bonus mechanics. Set in the more or less the same world with totally new stuff to do, it's kind of the perfect 3D re-imagining of ALttP

Moreover, it has quickly regenerating "magic" items, so no more hunting for green jars.

And spoilers, ALBTW link vs ALTTP/LA link (And this confirms that LA link survived after being stranded at the end of LA when he woke up):

if you mean using the the 3D feature, i believe it's possible through SNES9x

He means the 3D Classics line of series that Sega did some games on, mostly with the help of M2 Studios

i should also add that there's an oot3D mod that changes the textures to be like the beta which is more a link to the past-ish
but the guy who made it only made it for emulator, some attempts by others were made to port it to console but some don't know how to port
the textures or just haven't given a progress update in years

Sega had far more of these kinds of games on the 3DS than Nintendo put out.

Nintendo's classic 3D offerings:

Excitebike
Kid Icarus
Kirby's Adventure
Twin Bee
Urban Champion
Xevious

That's 6 from Nintendo (and 2 of them weren't even games they originally made)

Meanwhile, Sega's similar classic 3D offerings (many could be purchased individually, some could only be played as part of one of the collection releases):

After Burner II
Alien Syndrome
Altered Beast
Champion Boxing
Columns
Ecco the Dolphin
Fantasy Zone
Fantasy Zone II W
Fantasy Zone II: The Tears of Opa-Opa
Fantasy Zone: Opa-Opa Bros
Galaxy Force II
Girl's Garden
Gunstar Heroes
Maze Walker
Outrun 3-D
Power Drift
Puyo Puyo 2
Shinobi III
Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Space Harrier
Space Harrier 3-D
Streets of Rage
Streets of Rage 2
Super Hang-On
Thunder Blade
Thunder Force II
Turbo OutRun

That's a total of 28 from Sega. I'd say at over 4 times as many games, it wouldn't be right to call the output at about the same.

When I hear of retro games using 3D I instantly think about The 3-D Battles of WorldRunner, which was released by Square in 1987 on the FDS and NES.

It came packaged with red and blue 3D glasses that allow you to see a 3D effect by pressing Select during gameplay.

Some AR/VR/MR/XR? glasses seem to have the ability to convert 2D game into 3D. (it's just 3D display, not a Remastered/Remake game, and a powerful graphics card is required)

So, interestingly enough there is a decomp of ALTTP and a corresponding PC port. I did a minimum-effort 3DS port of that a while ago, just using SDL software rendering, and it ran at about 1/3 of the framerate it was supposed to.

Theoretically, if you could port it to use something like citro2d instead of the software rendering, you might be able to get the performance good enough to start introducing some stereoscopic 3D, similar to that one homebrew Sonic CD port from a while ago.

LMK if anyone's interested in trying this, I can see if I can dig up my old spaghetti code port as a starting place. Or not, I really didn't do much.

Edit: after a cursory glance at the code it might be a bit more difficult than that, most of the graphics is software emulation of the SNES PPU. Still might be a chance to improve performance a bit, but it won't be as easy as "replace all SDL functions with 3DS equivalents".

It would be awesome, but it's possible to scratch a better perfomance using the GBA version instead?
