Well I'm a uni student that doesn't have work (although I really want a job and I'm planning to get a part-time during my second year in uni) and I confess that I spend too much. I know it's no surprise that most uni students are expected to go broke really quick. I am clearly aware that I'm a part of it but the feeling sucks when you are unable to even afford the cheapest things! I'm on my first year right now and it's about to end (thank god!!!) and the third instalment of my loan is about to be deposited to my bank account sometime this week. Just so you know, my student loan is almost £6,000 a year so I get £2,700 for maintenance fees. This is split up to three instalments. My expenditures with the first two instalments were not so pretty. By the time it's a week before the next instalment comes, I'll only have about £10-20 left in my account, which is not a bad thing according to most of my mates because most students start to become broke way, way earlier than me.
I've spent my loan on video games, clothes, food, travel (which costs me £80 a month and each semester is 12 weeks worth), mobile tariff. You might think that my spending habit is normal, since half of it is consumed by travel and my monthly mobile phone bills, but isn't it ugly that I almost spent £300 on video games alone? I know, I'm ashamed of this. I like the fact that I have a much bigger library though, but I haven't played most of them! The 3DS didn't help either! I don't drink that much however (unlike most uni students), as I can just stay at home as it's cheaper to get a can from the nearest corner shop and I don't go out clubbing and to pubs everyday so you can clear out "Alcohol"
So what I did is I gave my debit cards to my mum and decided that I should go back to basics for a little while. I resorted to this option because when she took care of my finances, it felt really organized and I had a lot of money left by the time summer came. Of course I'm still gonna track the statements so I can check if she's touching my money but I trust her enough. I had to choose between this and completely transferring all of my remaining student loan to my savings account, which is not gonna be touch, but I just had this inkling that this little evil greedy side of me will slowly deplete that savings account.
I know this won't eliminate my money hunger, but I'd appreciate any tips from my fellow 'tempers here. I've already surrendered my debit cards to my mum (I'll still have access to statements since it's online and it'll only be temporary) and I decided that I'll spend as little as I can over the summer holidays (really the only ones I'm planning to buy are: Zelda 3DS, Portal 2 and an amplifier for my guitar).
And yes, flame me if you want for being a loan-dependent student spending £300 on video games!
Impulse buying, FUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!
