I have just installed a Fan Speed Mod chip into my 60GB PS3 Fat, I have had no issues except when separating the DVD Drive from the Main assembly I noticed a soft rubber pad that sits between a chip on the Drive and the main metalwork of the motherboard so to speak. Is this a THERMAL CONNECTION that requires new paste applying ?

Cheers!!!

In theory, it's for "cooling" of the bluray controller, yep

Thermal pads (especially of that thickness), unlike paste, are for low demand applications, you can reuse one quite a while unless it broke while detaching the part or it got dirty; whatever you do, don't add more paste on top/bottom of it...

But what you may not know (and neither did Sony) is that the motherboard shield is significantly heated by the power supply after about 30 minutes, so it may actually be better without!
Personally, I have removed it.
