luma 8.0 only works on B9S 1.2 if your on 1.0 or 1.1 you'll have to downgrade to luma 7.1 download link here, https://github.com/AuroraWright/Luma3DS/releases/download/v7.1/Luma3DSv7.1.7z
Extract Zip folder and copy the boot.firm to the root of your SD card. then go back to the 3ds.guide and look up how to update B9S to 1.2 before using luma updater again to re-download 8.0

He can't even get Luma to boot, what good would that do?

What exactly happens? Does it still just switch off after a while? If not, does the config come up if you hold SELECT while booting?

Press START to make it boot to the Home Menu and then do this: https://3ds.guide/updating-b9s

Once you're done, you can restore all your files to your SD card and everything should work again.

Once you've done that Update to BS9 1.2 by restoring all your files to your SD card - just make sure it's a fresh boot.firm 8.0 after restoring the files (and only after finishing the update guide)
