Nintendo strongly hints at 3D video chat for 3DS
QUOTE said:
Speaking from a technical point of view, Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata strongly hinted that the 3DS will incorporate features such as 3D video chat amongst others. So it looks like Nintendo will be going 3D crazy for more than just their videoo games on the 3DS.

QUOTE said:
"Technologically speaking, a variety of different things are possible with the 3DS, for example, 3-D video chat," Iwata said.

I just can't see how that would work since the 3D cameras are on the back of the display. Regular video chat on the 3DS yes, but video chat in 3D probably not.

You're right on the ball there. I wonder what they REALLY mean by 3D chat. Maybe just the image from the inside camera is shifted into 3-D?

But, that sounds crappy.

yeh i agree, unless you chat with the 3ds backwards it has to be a normal video chet

Heh, and even then, it couldn't be 3D video chat when you can only be on one side, either the 3D camera side, or the screen side.

Perhaps this is an indication of other changes being made to the hardware?

3d chat might work if you say something with the screen away from you, then you turn the 3ds to see what the other answers and alternate until someone drops his ds

You could plug in a NINTENDO 3DS earphone+micset into the bottom and twirl the 3D camera's to your face I guess.

No, 3-D Video chat just doesn't make sense. You'd have to keep turning the ds to see the screen.
Would 4 camera's be overkill?

they could have 2 cameras on the inside, and one on the outside, it actually would make a lot more sense imo, although i guess it would make it harder for people to take pictures of friends.

Anyways, even though they manage to get the 3D cameras on the Screen side, it would be useless because theres not a lot of people with 3D Laptops and Desktops, and all instant messaging programs would need to update their software to alloud 3D video cameras.
But, if they arrange the 3D cameras and just use them for Friend Codes that should be Okay.

They should just need to let the inner camera to be the principal one and allow you to change the output to the outer camera.

Maybe there was a secret compartment under the outer camera's where a second 3D screen lies, waiting for video chat!

Mind that Nintendo also strongly hinted at a DSi chat. It never happened.
But they have the ability to do it now, and quite well by the looks of the system.

And besides, if they don't than a homebrew developer will.

I know they have the possibility to do it right now, but they just don't do it. Maybe with a bit of luck, there'll be a new firmware update in which loads of things have been added... Maybe...

And before the DSi is hacked (which will probably take a LONG time, if ever) there can't be any homebrew made for it.

Having a 3D videochat with someone using the outward-facing 3D camera will be very difficult, at least until someone devises an ingenious method of turning the outward-facing camera into an inward-facing one by means of two mirrors.

tpi.gif

Now, good old Satoru has been known to casually mention stuff that doesn't exist yet, or that does but is supposed to be secret, or that he believes would be a good idea, or that he really thought existed, he could have sworn someone was talking about it earlier... and the development team then falls over themselves trying to make it happen in time for launch once the press and general populace attaches themselves to the idea that was just a throwaway remark like an Arcturan Megaleech attaches itself to its victim right before biting his head off and making off in his spaceship. We're talking game levels, characters, tracks, items, stuff like that, that he mentioned an upcoming title would have, without checking if the title actually had that feature planned at all, or if it was supposed to be a secret, to be revealed at a later date.

So it's quite possible he either forgot the 3DS only had a 3D camera facing outside, or he let slip that the final design will have 3D cameras on both sides, or, like I proposed earlier, Nintendo will release a somewhat unique addon for the 3DS called the 3DS Rear View Mirror.

they didnt really hint DSi chat, someone found a typo & said that. & if they did they probably stoped when they started on 3DS.

no one has hacked DSimode yet so impossible at the moment, on the other hand it doesn't have to be homebrew. company's can release anything on DSi shop including apps, & im sure a 3rd party company can make a web browser, chat, im, or any in that category, bu they haven't apparently. i was actually hoping f r a google chrome DSiware browser & a youtube watching DSiware .

since the one we saw was a prototype, they can either make another camera to add to the single one inside, or they can make cameras interchangeable by having the cameras flip when you want to have a 3d video chat or take a 3d pic of yourself.

Id just wish it have a zoom feature before you take a pic, instead of zooming in to the pic.
