so anyone wanna predict when nintendo will start pulling the whole DS Lite, DSi and DSi XL crap except with the 3ds? this is making me very hesitant to get a 3ds.

ill give it a 6months to a year. also the terrible launch titles were really disappointing. it doesnt show the 3ds's full potential as some of the upcoming titles will. also most of them are just remakes of old games and i really dont care about playing the same old game just on a different console.

The launch titles weren't terrible, they just weren't up to par with what we'd expect. Also, I doubt it's be six months to a year, I'll give it 2 to 3 years at least or none at all after what they said. However, this time around there is actually demand for a revision, and I wouldn't mind an XL. Though I doubt there will be a Lite or an "i".

I'm not sure where everyone keeps getting this "few months" idea from. The first DS didn't get upgraded for 2 years, and the DS Lite didn't get upgraded for another 2 years. The DSi received it's "upgrade" in 1 year - and the DSiXL isn't an upgrade like the DSi is to the DS Lite - it's just larger.

I wouldn't expect a new version of the 3DS for at least another two years.

The XL also has improved speakers and improved battery life. But as I said, it's more of a revision than an upgrade (though I would say size is an upgrade).

Right, but I was comparing it from the DS Lite's upgrade to the DSi - which is actual additional hardware that adds to game play (as opposed to improving it) and gives new content and features, among other things. With that being said, Nintendo's already said we won't be getting a "Lite" version any time soon, if at all. We'll definitely see some kind of revision (probably after the NGP comes out), but it'll be in the same generation line.

I think upgrade is defined here as "major hardware revision". As in the 2 cameras, twice as fast CPU, and 4x RAM.

Well in that case I agree with you.

My guess is 18 months from when it launched, and it will be a revision. So very similar specs with small improvements (much like the DS phat to lite) but not necessarily smaller, maybe slightly thinner though.

(about the same chance of winning the lottery as getting that right but meh

I heard so many complaints about the 3DS (especially the battery life) that I don't want to get one until the revision comes out (Especially one that fixes that damn battery life!). So you're saying I have to wait 2 YEARS?!??!!

Nintendo already said that they have no plans to make a "3DS lite" as they already used all the tricks they used on the DS lite to make the 3DS as small as possible. However knowing Nintendo, I wouldn't be surprised if they came out with some kind of updated 3DS but I wouldn't expect it anytime soon

Probably close to 2 years, but not more IMO. So you would miss out on all the cool titles in the next year and a half or so

It'd be kinda great if I could get through the intro of the cool titles without being hooked up to a wall though. [/sarcasm]

If they (not Nintendo, just someone/some people) some how make a battery that can keep it certain size, but more power.

Then all we have to do is replace the battery, without worry about a bigger system for some people.

The only way of dealing with battery issues isn't changing the hardware, software updates can optimize power usage, though it usually doesn't make much of a difference I think that it's possible that future firmware updates will probably do something of that sort in an attempt to fix some issues without a major hardware rev.

Based on the power consumption of the 3DS and the tech required, it'd be a damn expensive battery.

Just think how much money that would cost to Nintendo. They JUST released the 3DS. They know that if they make a hardware revision, many people are going to feel dissapointed, just like I felt when I first saw the DSi >_>

A year at least.
There's a lot of niggly little problems with the 3DS to me, nothing a ballbreaker, but stuff they could fix in a hardware revision to make it a better system.

I would say 2 years is the safe bet, 1 1/2 years at the earliest. There is no way there going to have a new model out in 6 months, as that would just royally piss off everybody who bought the first one early.

So, yeah, it's up to you if you want to wait the 2 years. Personally, it was too exciting of tech for me to wait:)

I don't see why everyone thinks Nintendo is going to do the same thing again.

Like they said, they added everything from the other upgrades from the start. I have a feeling they will do one revision a little over two years in with minor physical changes, but no internal handware changes.

reading the "Iwata Asks" topics on the 3ds, it was all they could do to get it the size it is now.. gonna take time to come up with new ways to make it smaller, not much different in size from a ds lite people (saw this with my own eyes).. I also don't see where there are major changes needed, my battery lasts rather well, granted mostly using the camera, street pass, wi fi always on.. I don't have any 3ds games as of yet, but use all the other features, and have yet to see the red battery light on my system, I am considering getrtubg the Nyky adapter, as I have had their battery add ons with my original DS and DS lite), making it smaller would make it harder for people with larger hands to use (mu hands are smaller and I find the 3ds comfortable)the people around me who also have 3ds's have no complaints with their systems, we all have a very slightly loose hinge, I showed it to the one who works at Gamestop, showed me his and wasn't exchanging his either, most have a bit of play, so did the other DS systems that I handled (having also worked at Gamestop for years, I handled quite a few DS's).
I don't think it would matter how well it was made, people would always find something to complain about, personally I feel that the 3ds is a VERY well made system, judging by the 6-7 I have actually seen and held, all were in similar shape.
