So did you join for any reason other than advertising this ebay sale?

probably not but it still should get a front page post. a 3ds dev unit is a nice find and we propagate to google in minutes. a post from us will help someone in the scene find out about this dev unit, while it will also probably bring him his asking price. its a double edged sword but i think its worth it if the unit has something cool that could benefit us all.

however, he did say that most of it isn't doing anything but turning on wifi. i don't know anything about this dev unit but i'm thinking it has a second part that sends stuff over wifi and perhaps docs with a pc for exchanging the data.

this unit alone might only be half of the puzzle.

Don't think it'll bring much to light. I don't have means of taking it apart and dumping the flash or anything. Without a legit flash cart I don't think I can run my own code. Dumping the two included programs would be LOVELY but I don't know how to. Don't think there's a way to export them to SD card.

Um, if you have no resources or tools to use it, why buy it? You should've just let someone whose able to make something out of it buy it.

I'm sure the dev units are just as locked-down as retail units, I doubt there's anything you can do with it.
It's a cool collectors item, though.

The best thing you can do is to post it on ebay and let a 3DS hacker purchase it, not a flash cart team, since they wouldn't know what to do with it.

The flashcart in question would need 3DS mode access to begin with so running ypur own code that way would not be possible. Dumping the nand I don't think is possble either afaik.

@Another World: That's an acceptable answer.

This thread was invisible for a moment until I saw your news post.
Excuse me for going off topic, but your Icon is absolutely hilarious. What's it from?

On Topic:
Would this make it easier for homebrew if an experienced coder got their hands on this?
Kinda confused

It might help with reverse engineering executable file formats if the two included applications can be dumped. Not sure if they are encrypted. Perhaps a disassembly of them could lead to clues about programming for the 3DS. This wouldn't help with actually getting homebrew to run on a retail model.

thanks to the magic of reverse image search, i bring you Futurama: The Fifth Element

as for this whole dev unit, i really don't think any chinese flashcart developer would reach out just to buy a dev unit, for all we know they may already have one

Edit: and it looked more like the dev unit that sold was sold to him, not he sold it to someone else, in fact his post saying he bought it links to the sold unit

Looks like Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth from Futurama but I dont remember that scene :S

This is legit. I played a dev unit 3DS at an event once. When it was in a game (I forget how), I pressed home twice and was lead to that screen shown on the front page. I guarantee it.

why so they can call ninty and try to report the bugs like they did with the wii?or refuse to work on it because it might enabke"piracy"
and what is wiibricker talking about when he says that a card team "wouldnt know what to do with it"
why not ,?i would think if anyone did it would be them ,and not some random hacker ,or collector that might potentially buy it

i doubt it is of any use anyway ,as the seller said there is not even a toolchain ,and ir dont even execute retail carts without the special flashcart,im sure if it had the toolcahin it could help develop homebrew for when an exploit is eventually found, but i doubt it would lead to any kind of exploit directly, there are wii and ps3 dev units ,and they havent helped the scene in any way really

Actually Some homebrew devs in the PS3 scene do use PS3 test and tool units for their advanced debugging features. They aren't useful in cracking the system, but are for developing homebrew.

i'm been doing some "researching", i think this is interesting

apparently you need some kind of specific, oversized cartridge, there were 3ds dev units spotted at this year's GDC (Game Developer's Conference), and this picture was taken

there's also this

Edit: there's also a high quality pic of the menu taken at a UK 3ds hands on event

interesting stuff Terminator. This unit has one of the more recent SDKs, r33437. If only I knew how to load programs.
