Hacking 3DS console update - Safe to download?

Haven't used my 3DS in a little while, and when i go to the shop it asks me to update the console. Is it safe to download so it won't patch the roms?

DS roms. I have a R4 card

It's impossible to answer your question without knowing what flashcart you use.
But if you're on 4.x, don't update.

Which R4 card? What does it say on the front? Post a picture of it.
There are about a million R4 cards.

Check the website of that specific R4 card for the latest firmware update, to see if it's compatible with 3DS v8.1

1- check the website that's printed on your cart's label
2- download the new firmware and update it
3- update your console

if there is a patch for 8.10 update the card FIRST then your 3DS the only cart that can update while blocked is the DSTWO (due to the on board Processor) if you updated your 3ds first by mistake buy/borrow/steal (just kidding on stealing ) a DS/Lite/I/ lower firmware 3DS and update through that

I can't find a Kernel update for 8.10 which makes me think 3 things,

1 it's okay to update without new Kernel
2. no new Kernel is out to support 8.10
3. i haven't looked hard enough

R4 from r4ids.cn and DSTwo are both best flashcard (for DS games).
Always updated to last firm from Nintendo.
Just look at website, upgrade the firmware of the R4.
