If boot.firm is the only thing corrupted then your 3DS isnt bricked at all... Just replace the boot.firm on your NAND with a working one with GodMode9? Using boot.firm from SD should still be possible after all.

How can you brick your device with boot.firm file? Just put latest boot.firm to root of your SD and you should be booting again.

How would I make it boot from the sd card?

Did you not follow 3ds.guide??? You just copy boot.firm from the Luma zip to the root of your SD Card. Then you can use godmode9 to replace the corrupt boot.firm on NAND.
I’m unable to do this because as soon as I turn it on it turns right back off

Follow these steps:
  1. Copy the Luma3DS 8.1.1 boot.firm to the root of your SD card and attempt to power on your 3DS.
  2. If that doesn't work, copy the Luma3DS 7.1 boot.firm to the root of your SD card and attempt to power on your 3DS.
  3. If that doesn't work, copy the Luma3DS 7.0.5 arm9loaderhax.bin to the root of your SD card and attempt to power on your 3DS.
