You might be able to trade the gift card for someones old laptop if you put up a listing. If all you want to do is code it shouldn't be too bad
other than that I can't think of much to be honest. Maybe look into raspberry pis?

Provided you're okay with compiling on Linux just about any Pi should suffice. It's certainly busy work since Raspberry Pi's are not exactly computing powerhouses, but you can get them cheap and as long as you manage to compile DevkitPro and libctru, you're pretty much golden. Ideally an x86 PC with a little more processing power behind it would be better, but for beginner homebrew a cheapy SBC will work just fine. The additional benefit is that SBC's are good fun to mess around with in and out of themselves, so you'll have two things to code for, as opposed to just one.

@Foxi4 It is an immense pain to make devkitpro work on an ARM device like a raspberry pi.
It already takes several hours on an 8700k to compile it like when you want to compile gbarunner2 but wintermute has deleted all older devkits that provided working code so you have to painstakingly put the missing source code archives together to compile it using the buildscripts he didn't delete.
I started the compilation on my pi zero w but stopped it after a whole day of compilation.

That's correct, it's a huge headache, which is why I recommend a normal PC instead, even a bargain bin collection of used parts will function better.

Yes.
https://www.amazon.com/DLI-Atomic-P...atomic+pi&qid=1576527839&s=electronics&sr=1-2
This is Atom based so it works like a regular PC. Price is crazy low right now, even lower than the usual $35-40 (without the breakout board and camera)
Not that you need the camera, but it's included for basically free so...

You'll also need a power supply, something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Compatible-Atomic-Odroid-Adapter-Breakout/dp/B07SMQMVHC/

Or this:
https://www.amazon.com/SMAKN-Switching-Supply-Adapter-100-240/dp/B01N4HYWAM/

But any PSU that is 5V and at least 2.4A will work if it has the right connector. You can find universal power supplies for laptops etc. that come with different connectors that will work. You may even be lucky and have one that will work from some other device, just make sure the polarity is correct.

devkitARM does actually compile in around 10 minutes with older dual core (x86_64) CPU from around 5-6 years ago + RAM disk (it's only gcc + a few tools and ctrulib). I have tried it. But a Raspberry Pi will of course take much longer. Probably does it in 1h provided you have enough RAM but the >1 GB versions are too expensive for the OP.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way

i dont have an sd card adapter but I have an usb sd card adapter

it says it only works for the original R4, R4i Gold (r4ids.cn), R4iDSN (r4idsn.com) and Acekard R.P.G.

    nvm it does support mine
