Full Throttle
Full Throttle, released by LucasArts on April 30th, 1995, was the 10th game to use the SCUMM engine. Distributed only on CD-ROM, the game included a full voiceover soundtrack and select CD-quality audio tracks from the album Bone to Pick by The Gone Jackals. Utilizing the INSANE (INteractive Streaming ANimation Engine) engine, Full Throttle featured fully animated voice-acted cut scenes by a group of voice-acting professionals, including Roy Conrad as the voice of Ben.
The story stars Ben, the leader of a motorcycle club known as the Polecats, in a post-apocalyptic influenced dystopian future. As motorcycles and the freedom they represent are being replaced by anti-gravitational vehicles, the CEO of Corley Motors, the last motorcycle manufacturer in the country, befriends Ben and asks him to be an escort to an annual shareholders meeting. Ben's agreement sets off a spiraling adventure that aims to expose a murderer while stopping Corley Motors from becoming a Minivan manufacturer.
Full Throttle is a classic third-person point-and-click adventure game which relies heavily on user input. The player can left-click to move Ben or hold this button press on certain objects to view a set of interactive options, such as "use", "hit", "examine", "speak", etc. Right-clicking anywhere else on the screen will open an inventory window which contains tools or weapons the player may have collected. As Ben interacts with different characters he may be presented with different dialogue choices, allowing the player to choose the path of the conversation. Different from other SCUMM engine games, which simply would tell you when you did something wrong, incorrect choices can result in the main character's death. Thankfully, a forgiving system of endless continues allows the player to try each failed sequence as many times as needed.
A direct sequel to Full Throttle was in development until differences in opinions killed the project. In 2002 LucasArts planned a Windows, PS2, and XBOX action-adventure game set in the Full Throttle universe. This project was also cancelled citing such reasons as poor graphics and the death of Roy Conrad.
Thanks to the talented programming efforts of AgentQ, Full Throttle is fully playable on a special build of ScummVMDS. However, this build requires a Slot-2 RAM expansion card such as the EZ 3in1. While brief discussions ensued for alternative support, ScummVMDS' J-build was never ported to DSi-Mode or CPU-enhanced Slot-1 Flash Kits such as the SCDS2.
Full Throttle is a unique SCUMM engine game, complete with an edgy attitude, CD-quality audio, fully animated cut-scenes, and various game play elements. It is easy to enjoy this game almost anywhere as ScummVM exists for many operating systems and various video game systems. Do yourself a favor and track down one of the two known release builds (both play the same), after all, it's recommended!
