Hi all, really appreciate some help please. Just bought 2DS XL for my daughter and without researching much bought a R4 Gold 3DS plus flash card with 32 GB sd card. After installing wood r4 firmware it loads the . nds games on the flash card sd card no problem. However, now she wants to play 3DS game and I found a bunch.3DS files, put in the sd card inside the R4 but the menus doesn't pickup the .3DS games.

How do I play .3DS games with this setup ? I watched a video to install ntrboot , FBI etc , is this the process I need to install to play .3DS files ? Also if I mod the console, where will the 3DS games stored , in the sd card in the console or sd card in the R4? If the games are stored in the sd card inside the console, should I just use the new 32gb card for that slot ?

Thank you in advance, would really appreciate some straight answers to make a little girl's Christmas full of fun :)

3ds files are not able to be read with your flashcart. They are meant to be read by now obsolete 3ds flashcard.
The best way to play backups is to install luma cfw and use cia files.

Thanks, so should I use the new 32gb card and put into the console since after modding I don't even need the R4 card anyone? And how, just copy and paste ?

Thanks everyone for the quick answer. Just one more question to make it simple for me.... Should I just download the files there and follow instructions on this below video ?

Then also should I replace the 4gb card in the console with the 32gb and if so how ?

Heads up. Try not to watch and follow video tutorials because they tend to be outdated and are sometimes wrong about stuff.

The go to source for hacking is 3ds.hacks.guide. Since you bought a R4i Gold 3DS Plus, you'll follow the ntrboot method (single system).
Skip the steps about using ntrboot flasher as yours comes preflashed. There's a toggle switch inside that changes between DS and ntrboot modes.

Thanks again. Should I insert the new 32gb sd card to the console as the main card as it sounds like the 3DS games would be stored at the console sd card ?

Yes, 3DS titles like the ones you buy from Nintendo eShop are placed on the SD card.
Those that are ripped from 3DS game carts are typically in *.3ds format.
You use something like GodMode9 or even the desktop program 3DS CIA Simple Converter to make them into *.cia format.
- The maximum size for a *.3ds rom is 4 GB, which requires the latter program.

Before using that card, you should:
  1. Copy everything off the card onto a computer.
  2. Reformat it as FAT32 + 32 KB cluster size with either Windows File Explorer or guiformat (if bigger than 32 GB).
  3. Full Write + Verify the empty card with H2testw. This is to check for hardware defects. Do not skip this step, please.
  4. Delete the *.h2w test files if the card passes. However, if an error was reported, you must replace the failed card.
    • Go back to step 1 if the card was found to be faulty. There is no way to fix hardware based problems.
  5. Add everything back onto the card.
If you later find 32 GB isn't big enough, check my signature for SD card deals.
A good size/price ratio are 128 GB micro SD cards for about $20 (current rates). Always check with H2testw before using any new flash memory.

If you end up getting a 128 GB or bigger card, you may choose to format it in FAT32 + 64 KB cluster size for slight performance gain.
Just don't use 64 KB cluster size for 64 GB and under.

Thank you so much.for the details.

So after everything is done, ideally I would have a 32gb card in the console with all the firmware and cia files/game in there. And what do I do with the R4 with sd card ? Can I simply insert it to play old DS games (switch back to D mode) ?

You switch it back to D mode, use the 4 GB micro SD card reformat as FAT32 + 32 KB cluster , add back the kernel menu files (you can download yours here),

The one you want to use should be:
  • WOOD R4 V1.64 Released. (2013-11-08)
and lastly, go about your own business obtaining *.nds roms to put on the card.

phew...
THE R4 HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH 3DS GAMES!
Lemme explain:
the R4, no matter how you look at it, it WONT RUN 3DS GAMES. It is only for DS games. The 3DS labelling indicates that you can play it on a 3DS.
For 3DS games? You don't need anything, at all. Just your 3DS. Installing your 3DS games via FBI essentially lets you play those titles on your Home Menu.
Pirating is never cool, (in my opinon, thats with the case with a list I'll show later.) but that will never stop you from dumping your 3DS cartridges via GodMode9.

For what (in my opinion) I think is pirating, look below.

  • Nintendo (Handheld) : DS and higher (DSiWare excluded)
  • Nintendo (Console) : Disc-Based Wii games and higher (WiiWare and any removed Wii U eShop games excluded)
  • XBOX : Xbox 360 and higher (Removed XBLA games excluded)
  • PlayStation (Handheld) : PS Vita
  • PlayStation (Console) : PS2 and higher
Not exactly something that will never gain grains of salt, but it's what I think of when piracy is a thing.

Thanks again every one. But there is still one thing I am unsure of...So I install CFW to the sd card at the console slot and then switch back the R4 to D mode load DS games in the sd card there, will the console now be able to play 3DS games from the sd card AND have the option to play the DS games from the R4? Or I lose the ability to play DS games once I loaded CFW ?

the sd card has a few files to launch CFW it never is what cfw is written to. Its wrote to the core of the 3ds console. Deep enough that sd card formats. console formats. nothing of that sort will ever wipe it away.

precisely . . . in fact you will also be able to play older consoles roms via emulators (or in install-able cia format) including sega, gba, gb(c), snes, nes, and game gear (to name a few) all without any loss of function to your console

Once you flip the switch on your R4 back to D like it was before, it'll revert back to how it was before and let you play DS roms off the SD card inserted into it. The CFW on the 3DS won't affect it at all, you'll still be able to pop it in like normal and play roms while also playing any 3DS titles you've installed onto your system.

you forgot to add the word modern . . . old cfws like rxtools and early versions of luma did in fact install to the sd card and in no way to the console
