So after having my VWii modded a while back the hard drive I had setup for my VWii finally died…. Because I ignored it for so long. So at the risk of asking a stupid question, what hard drives work with the Wii U / vWii. Do I need to hunt down a specific USB 2.0 drive or should something more common work? Is it still recommended to have 2 separate drives for Wii U and vWii?

Hello.:)

For the vWii a Recommendation is still this Example HDD:
https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B06W55K9N6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Western Digital Drives seems to be the a good and "safe" Choice for the Wii/vWii/Wii U.

Is it still recommended to have 2 separate drives for Wii U and vWii?
Yes,due the different Filesystem/Format.:(

Thank you.:)

Thank you very much for the quick response! Do you know if it’s safe to hack the WiiU after the vWii has been hacked?
You modded the vWii first ?

Ok,that is new to me.:D
You mean, you have the Homebrew Launcher already on the Wii U´s Main Screen ?
Are you sure you did not have a already modded Wii U ?

Thank you.:)

I've found with the right SSD, you don't need Y cables or external power. You can just power it straight from one USB port.

I'm using a PNY Elite 480gb. It says USB 3.0 but works perfectly with just one of the Wii U's 2.0 ports. I'm not sure about other SSDs but they'll probably work too.

I got it from eBay for $25 a while back. It works perfectly as an FAT32 device for vWii and GC games. I'll be getting another one if I can find it on sale again for regular Wii U games.

Most HDDs work, just avoid flash drives, and make sure you use Y-cables (or a powered hub) with 2.5" drives.
You can use a single drive for Wii U and vWii if you convert your Wii (and GameCube) games to Wii VC (launchable from Wii U Menu) but it's more hassle to convert, it's up to you which you prefer.

@dermo529 You should not use a SSD because the Wii U tends to do a lot of writes. Also the filesystem is not good for garbage collection and the Wii U does not send TRIM requests. This combination will wear out the SSD pretty fast. USB 3 is backward compatible but you won't gain any speed benefits.

Now back to topic: I'm using a 2.5" WD blue drive. First I tried to use a USB enclosure but that didn't work (while a older WD black worked perfectly fine inside it. Also the WD blue worked in this enclosure on a PC, just not on the Wii U) so I'm using a cheap SATA to USB adapter now and that combination works. Note that the bottleneck on the Wii U is USB 2.0, so using high speed drives won't give any benefits.
That said just use a cheap HDD. If it won't work try a different SATA to USB adapter.
