Misc So I just had a brick scare. Need advice.

First off, I need to say I'm stupid. I do have a backup, but it's from back in 2018, so while it would have fixed my switch were it actually 'soft' bricked, it would have been a hell of a pain. Secondly, I was running on SysMMC because, like I said, I'm stupid.

My Switch randomly froze up while I was installing an update, and nothing but the sleep menu would come up, so I hard rebooted (stupid), and it would only boot up to a black screen (fusee) and the Switch logo (Stock). Long story short, it randomly booted up while I was preparing to restore my nand backup. Now I want to be as safe as physically possible, so I want to make a fresh NAND backup, and was also wondering if it would be worth making an emuMMC while I'm at it.

I'm not sure what all the current tools for backups, nor how to make an emuMMC backup.

Secondary question - my Switch is bloated with dozens of old homebrew apps that are 2+ years old and don't even work on the current firmware. Is there a good way to get rid of all of these?

If you've been running on SysMMC all this time, I'm assuming your Switch is banned. With a banned Switch, there's not much reason for emuMMC. On the off-chance you're not banned, and you want to start using emuMMC, you can use Haku33 to clean up traces of CFW. Be forewarned though, Haku33 cannot unban your Switch if it's already been banned, and there's no guarantee that your Switch won't get banned down the road. But if you're not sure if your Switch is banned, and you want to play legit games online with SysMMC, it's worth a try.

As for making backups, Hekate has a nice GUI frontend that will basically do all the hard work for you. And TegraExplorer can help you prepare a SD card for emuMMC. Removing all your old homebrew apps is as simple as deleting your switch folder on the SD card.

I am banned, yeah. Really just wanted to do emuMMC on the off chance the switch bricks, not sure if that gives me any sort of protection though. That's more what I was wondering.

If you're already banned, I wouldn't worry about emuMMC. Just make sure you have good backups of your sysMMC, which you can make using Hekate. If I were you, I'd make a new backup after every successful system update.

On the off-chance your Switch bricks, assuming it's due to corruption on the internal eMMC, you can simply restore your latest backup to it. If the internal eMMC is damaged to the point that restoring won't help, you can use your latest backup to create an emuMMC, and then boot off of that. Or alternatively replace the whole eMMC altogether (some people have upgraded it to have as much as 256gb internal storage.)

It's relatively rare anything like that happens though. It's certainly possible, but it's more likely that your Switch will brick due to something power-related instead. If your Switch bricks, it's more likely that it will be in such a way that neither a backup nor an emuMMC will help you.

Outside of manually deleting them, no.

just wipe the atmosphere/contents folder and switch folder on your sd.
