Xbox and Samsung announce partnership for mobile cloud gaming

At its Galaxy Unpacked 2020 event in San Francisco yesterday, Samsung announced more than just its upcoming lineup of smartphones. In particular, the Korean company announced a partnership with Microsoft to bring a "premium cloud-based game streaming experience to mobile players".

“This is just the beginning of our gaming partnership with Xbox,” explained David S. Park, head of Samsung’s US marketing, on stage. “Both Samsung and Xbox share a vision for bringing great gaming experiences to mobile players around the world. With our 5G-enabled portfolios and Microsoft’s rich history in gaming, we are working closely together to create a premium cloud-based game streaming experience. You’ll hear more about it later this year.”

While more details were scant, it's likely a move to bring Project xCloud to Android-powered Samsung devices. Speaking to The Verge, Kareem Choudhry, Microsoft’s Project xCloud chief, seems to confirm those speculations with the following statement: “We’ve seen positive feedback from Project xCloud preview participants testing a range of Galaxy devices, and it will only get better as we continue to work closely with Samsung on refining the experience. It’s an exciting time to be working on Project xCloud, and we can’t wait to share more about our work with Samsung later this year.”

Park also revealed the upcoming Forza Street for Galaxy devices, with pre-registration open now:

Resist this guy's, as long as we can. We don't want game streaming to become the industry standard for game distribution. It's a huge get blow against video game consumer rights as far as game ownership goes.

I don't get it, do you still buy the games individually or is it a monthly subscription service? Either way it's completely redundant between Steam remote play, GeForce NOW and Stadia. There's not nearly enough demand for this type of thing to sustain so many options for very long.

Just swapped my note out for a one plus less than a month ago. Sucks i'll probably have to wait a little to try out the cloud gaming, but my one plus 7T is so much better than my note was (and half the price :D).

This might be an OK idea.
Xbox hasn't gotten that strong of a foothold in the East-Asian market (especially in markets like Japan).
Mobile is huge now, so if they can make a push from that side, there's no need to compete directly on the console side.
PSNow is not available for mobile devices, and only recently has PS Remote Play become available to Android phones besides the Xperia.
(XCloud works fine for me when streaming games from the cloud, but the home console streaming function still needs work.)

I'm sure Microsoft will fuck this up in some way... Whenever they announce something it always sounds cool, but the implementation is awful (Windows10, the new Minecraft launcher, Windows Phone just to name a few).
Windows 10 is decent though

I wont get behind cloud gaming as I like to admire my array of cases on the shelf. But this is a smart move and I'd like to see where it goes. If Xbox owners can pause their games, get on the bus, pull out their phone and continue playing (like remote play with vita) I'm all for it. It's a good idea.

I rather enjoy a life of taking it easy. I haven't reached that life yet though.
