Mother 4 fangame still in active development, is now an entirely new game renamed as "Oddity"

You might recall that a few years ago--a decade, in fact--back in 2010, a team of fans banded together to create the sequel that Nintendo would not: Mother 4. The fangame looked every bit the part that a new Mother entry would, with the same visual style as its more official predecessors. It would tell the tale of three kids and a biker gang leader, dealing with trippy enemies and weird locations. For years, those fans worked on Mother 4, hoping to one day release it in winter of 2014. As we all know, that never happened. Whether due to a secret cease and desist sent by Nintendo, who has actively thwarted fanmade games before such as AM2R and Pokemon Uranium, or not, it seemed that the project had been put on hold.

Now, all those years of waiting have been rewarded, as the Mother 4 fangame team is back, and has revealed their reborn project to the public. Mother 4 has now been renamed to "Oddity", and is a brand new official indie game. It still looks very much like its inspiration, from the look of the text boxes, to the character designs, and especially the battle system.

ODDITY is a surreal urban fantasy role playing game set in the Seventies. Play as Travis Fields, an ordinary boy who leaves home in a bid to save the world Travis takes to the field armed with a baseball bat and pellet gun... Along with powers he's only now discovering. It might have something to do with that "Gate" thing that blew up on an impromptu camping trip... ...Whatever the case, the world's in danger! People are crabby, demons run amok, the moon's covered in creepy ooze, a bear did something... And to top it all off, there's even a secret society called the "Modern Men" popping up lately. They might be behind all the recent kidnappings... But don't worry! You'll make plenty of friends as you fight your way through this weird and groovy world! If you're looking for a roadtrip full of oddball characters and serious challenge with lots of heart... then ODDITY is for you!

As it stands, there is no release date for Oddity, though when it does hopefully, eventually release, it'll be free to download, on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

At this point they might as well sell it. It's an original IP yet it looks so good people wouldn't think twice before throwing a few bucks their way.
These devs have soul. They care more about the game than money. Not a lot of devs these day are like that. Oddity will explode in popularity I am sure, hopefully it could even come to consoles!

If a console port does happen it'd probably be paid while the PC versions are free since porting a game to consoles is expensive. But with their goal it'd probably be extremely cheap if they do that route.

well considering we never got mother 3 localized besides a fan translation this is a good treat, and to say nintendo can sue for likeness remember two things undertale (which is on the switch ironicly) was a rip off or rather inspiration of Mother with mechanics of mother 3 (namely the interactive battle system in M3) and 2 by suing them they open a can of worms where nintendo would be sued by multiple companies for simillar likeness in their games and vice versa it'll be a mess

every so often we get members who are obsessed with the Mother series on here. they creaming themselves right now.

Hell yes, you can bet your bottom on that, I love myself some Mother. The game may not be my childhood, but it certainly has aged well, and I have had a blast playing it, no nostalgia here to cloud my judgment, just a damn good game.

Fan games always keep amazing me :)

Sad to see though how much companies protect their IP, but of course with very good reasons and all.

Wish that a lot more of these type of projects would see the outcome that Sonic Mania had.
With that I mean have people involved in fan games transition from there to actually getting to work on an official release.

but honestly you think a name change would stop a C&D thank god nintendo isn't Korean where their copyright law is even stricter than the US or games like undertale or oddity wouldn't exist (the brand isn't only copyrighted but also concepts, designs are too, example would be PubG vs fortnite Bluehole knew how loose US CRA is so they tried to sue epic on their home turf

I'll be honest that for the most part I snubbed this project, specially because they insisted on calling it Mother 4 well beyond any measure of reason. When Itoi mentioned he wanted the fans to do a Mother 4, it was obvious he didn't meant it in such a literal sense, but as a means to carry on.

I'm still doubtful whether this will turn out good as much of Mother's charm lies in the writing, and unless they plan on doing their own thing, it's a devilish style to emulate. Toby Fox managed to do it, though, but I think that's a case for the ages.

Nonetheless, the new name is much better than the last one. The fact it's a Bowie nod is the icing on the cake.

I do think the devs should make this a commercially viable product, as we live in a capitalist society and I do believe good work should be rewarded, even if only as a means for the creators to keep on creating. If the devs to ultimately decide against it, however, it's none of my business.

I have zero interest in these people after they got rid of the old composer and the Mother name. This is just another wannabe indie game now.

Lisa is Mother 4 now as far as i'm concerned.
