Anyone know if there are plans to improve the Vice Ui options and overall user-friendliness
I see the libretro codebase updated recently to 3.3 vice core so good to see it’s still active
Such a legendary computer needs some tlc

Yes Vice cores are now much better and getting better still everyday. Also there's now a Vice x64sc core with more accurate emulation than Vice x64.

For best results with the new Vice cores:
Go to QUICKMENU->OPTIONS and press START on every option to reset to default. Especially the mapper and mapper_hotkey options. Then configure from there. Also set your QUICKMENU->CONTROLS to VICE_JOYSTICK

After you do that, it is very easy to use:
L toggles the onscreen keyboard.

And there are other hotkeys, you can see them in Quickmenu->Options.

If a hotkey is chosen, then chose a mapper_* button to match the hotkey, and that button will have that functionality.

By resetting to defaults, you can see how it works, e.g. Virtual Keyboard Hotkey is set to F11, and mapper_L is also set to F11. That's why L button brings up the virtual keyboard.

This is all in QUiCKMENU->OPTIONS now. It is now more easy to see which mapping is what. Before it was impossible to tell without knowing. Now you can see it by comparing the hotkeys to the mapper_* values and make them match.

Of course, this is still a bit kludgy but keep in mind we are trying to make this work well on all systems, with mouse control, physical keyboard control and gamepad control. So we have to cater to every possibility.

I just improved the the virtual keyboard to make it more responsive today. These improvement will be in tomorrow's nightly (August 1).

What's the recommended way to update? I'm still on 1.7.5 with random nightly/Patreon cores.
Either use the Online Updater from inside RetroArch.
Or if you don't want to connect to the internet, download them from here:
buildbot.libretro.com/nightly/nintendo/switch/libnx

Grab the latest package.

Is the nightly still recommended over the stable? Also, is overwriting recommended? Or a full delete?

I've been using nightlies almost every week, haven't had any particular issue.
If you want, go for stable just to be sure, or wait for the 1.7.8 release to update.

Also, I would recommend that, since you are using very old builds (almost beta), that you rename your current "retroarch" folder to something else (like retrobak). Then copy the entirety of the nightly package into the root of your SD card, and fire up RetroArch.

Once RetroArch starts in the Switch, it will create the appropriate folders for its initial setup.
After that, you can copy ONLY your save and bios folders from your "retrobak" folder into the new "retroarch".
That way we can be sure that there won't be any configuration problems for certain cores or games.

Great advice. Gracias.

I also recommend nightlies for example vice cores are being improved every day now. You can update certain cores using online updater inside Retroarch.

Just select Update core info and update core. Then select the core you want to update. It will automatically download the latest nightly version of that core.
