Windows tablet runs desktop programs

Hello,

I'm about to buy new tablet for a work. Since my company doesn't uses any tablets for a work, I highly doubt that we have ported version of program for android or windows tablet which we use for a work. So is there a way to run that program on windows tablet as long as it meets system requirements?

Also from what I red, it is possible to run windows exe files on android tablets. Is it legit or just another waste of time?

There are laptops that double as tablets, the Microsoft surface is a good device I hear but it's a tad on the expensive side (depending on the spec you decide to choose). It'll run any executable an ordinary computer can run.

There are tablets that run actual windows, get something running desktop windows - anything else will be a disappointment

So there are 2 types of windows tablet? Ones with actual windows and one with tablet version of windows?

There's Windows RT, and then there's full Windows. At this point, pretty much 0 modern devices use Windows RT anymore. Any tablet PC you buy that has Windows from like 2016+ is almost guaranteed to be running a full version of Windows.

When in doubt, just make sure whatever you buy doesn't say Windows RT, and you'll be fine.

EDIT: There's also Windows 10 S, but that was discontinued IIRC.

Anything that works on desktop Windows will work on a tablet running Windows 10, albeit with potential barriers to input (Touch versus mouse). This can usually be bypassed by either linking a mouse or using the built-in on-screen touchpad.

Wine 3.0 on Android is indeed a massive waste of time. Even on the off chance you get something which will run in it, it will probably not work with the arm/arm64 architecture of most phones and tablets anyway, rendering the whole effort pointless.

Not really. The only Windows device which isn't running the "full" version of Windows is Windows Phones, which aren't a thing anymore outside of refurbs and second-hand sales. If it's a tablet and is running Windows 10, it's probably the desktop version.

An edit, I forgot about Windows RT. That isn't what you're looking for either (Refer to Toms post)

Windows RT is an edition of Windows 8 and 8.1. If it says 10, it is not RT.

There's no such thing as windows 10 RT - there is its spiritual successor (windows 10 ARM) but not only it includes some compatibility with x86 software, I'm not sure if it's available on mass market products

Just make sure what you buy has an Intel processor (not sure if AMD deals in tablet chips but that's fine too), and it will be compatible with "windows for PC" programs

There's a few of them around (Likely as an experiment to see if they catch on), but nothing overly major yet.

What about Microsoft surface RT? As far what I found, there is way to install windows 10 on Surface RT. Does it mean that I'm able to install also every desktop program on that RT surface if it has Windows 10?

my 2 cents, I bought a cheap toshiba win8.1 tablet years ago, runs programs great. There are problems and gripes with cheap windows tablets, for instance the "sleep" function is not the same as with an Android or iOS device. RT apps were designed to run in the background even when the tablet is "sleeping," and this isn't compatible with windows 8 (you toggle between RT mode and regular PC mode.) what I do is use "hibernate" which suspends all the processes, and you can go right back to where you left off, but it takes like 10-15 seconds.

I have no clue if that "sleep" function was addressed in later/more expensive tablets. Another gripe is my tablet won't charge and use a USB device at once. There are tradeoffs, but ultimately it's great to be able to carry around a windows device in your pocket.

No. Only "some" functionality would be available for the RT tablets because they don't use x86 CPUs, they use ARM SoC. While MS is working on x86 emulation for ARM, it's still quite early and super slow, I would not recommend it at all personally if you're looking for something that's purely for work use.

Avoid Windows RT and Windows 10 S if you want a full Windows tablet.

EDIT: Now that I'm not on mobile, I can put it more into perspective as to why I strongly recommend you avoid any RT/Windows 10 on ARM devices. Benchmarks done last year were showing the Snapdragon 835 (a high end SoC for mobile devices in 2017, has 8 cores and 8 threads at 10nm fab) as performing slower in basically every benchmark than a bog standard budget-level 4c/4t Celeron N3450 CPU from 2016.

And that's a high end ARM SoC from 2017. Now imagine those numbers with a Surface/Surface 2 RT's 7/6 year old ARM SoCs. Quite frankly you'd be better off buying a shitty laptop from 10 years ago than using a Surface RT with Windows 10 for ARM.

A newer model Surface sounds like it'll be perfect for your needs. It will run Windows executable files just like you're asking, as well as run almost anything available on normal Windows 10 PCs.

I own a Lenovo Yoga Book (the first version) windows 10 edition ZA0V0035US. It's not a powerfull device but it works great for office work. The battery lasts up to 10-12 hours and it's around 350 dollars. Much cheaper than the Surface pro.

If you're not on a budget I'd recommend the new lenovo yoga book C930 as it has i5 processor. Check them on youtube reviews, they are fun haha

I had one for over a year. The experience is great. I gave it to a family member for the lack of use (I rather have a full computer experience) but when it comes to compatibility it had no issues. Run everything I threw at it.

You definitely should give it a try.

EDIT -

Obviously when it comes to gaming the story isn't as bright. You should check the games aspects and if you want it for gaming, well maybe expend less in the tablet and get a gaming laptop?
