no, you were never forced to register except during digg-like times (when there are too many people online)
guests can view the portal and several forums aswell, the wiki, the release lists, etc.

Well to me the decline of the site seemed to start around the time registration was for the most part necessary...right now on my other pc as a a lurker I can see topics like "What's more scary?" and "Next Gen systems .... im st..." however I can't view them. Trust me I view 4 gaming sites but am only a member here (Not out of force but cause at the time it seemed like a cool place to hang out)....there is another site I check out which I am ashamed of...but there is some good news every once in a while... anyway there has been about 20 times over the past 4 years I have REALLY wanted to speak my opinion on a matter and probably 100 times I would have chimed it for the hell of it... but I am not a member and don't like the community enough to bother to sign up. Now had they blocked my ability to see "so&so's" advice on "what programs he uses most"....I might reconsider registering... and then those 120 post I wanted to make would have gotten made. Plus some more BS post....just my two cents on the matter.

Registering is pretty hard, I just tried to register and (if you look at the members list) you will see that I tried multiple times, and I kept getting errors and the site wouldn't respond....

But flamers should be dealt with, harshly

trolling.gif

Good day fellow 'tempers,
I wanted to say just a couple of things... First of all:

GBAtemp is a discussion forum, and we prefer and promote at least semi-intelligent discussions at that. Lately there's been a whole lot of clutter around here to clean up, and I think with a modicum of restraint from our members, we, the moderators can allow you to govern yourselves. That's the way we like it. We prefer to spend our time helping you to enjoy the site, not stopping flame-wars and deleting useless topics and posts. If you feel the desire to spew forth gobbledegook, we have a perfectly serviceable Testing Area, shoutbox, and of course there's always irc...

So please, be civil towards each other. If you think someone is being a jerk, that's fine, but if you call them a jerk, then hey-presto! you have just steered the topic right into a flame war! A much better way to handle an ass-monkey is to report them. At the bottom of each post is a REPORT! link, clicking that will allow you to alert a moderator to the offensive post, and help keep the topic from devolving. Then reach around and pat yourself on the back, having done your part in keeping GBAtemp from turning into GameF***.

Actually, if you take a couple of minutes to read the forum rules, you will, in following them, instantly become a more useful member of our community. We of course want you to have fun here, but if you are the only one having fun, then you are likely headed straight for a warning, suspension, or worse. So take a second to think before you type, the site will be the better for it.

Oh, and by the way... Our fifth birthday is coming up later this month, and we have a small surprise in store. I'd tell you more about it, but all this moderating is wearing my fingers out, so you'll just have to wait a bit. Suffice it to say, I like it, and I think you'll like it too. It's something many of us have been asking for, and soon the wait will be over.

Thanks for reading this, and again, please take a minute to review the forum rules. Help keep GBAtemp the best we can be. You, after all, are what we are made of, and you are who I proudly serve.

Sincerely,
mthrniteÂ

I'll let you guys in on a little secret:

Some of the people who are perceived as being part of the problem, I actually really enjoy. I don't generally refer to them with a derogatory name, I call them "the cranks". Often, while certainly being a bit harsh, they cut through the bullshit present in any given topic, and serve to wipe the slate and actually get a careening topic back where it's supposed to be.

What I'm trying to say is, there is a gray area, and some of the "trolls" are actually useful to the site. However, those same people are the ones who have, in my view, the most responsibility to police themselves, to not go too far, to know when to stop.

I don't agree with this at all. I am actually surprised to see a MOD post something like this. It actually contradicts the point of this topic. Maybe I was wrong about this forum? Maybe this place is destined to be just another web forum hell hole like GameFaqs and NeoGAF.

The biggest problem with any message board is the hostility between the users. Being snide and making smart ass comments only encourages an atmospere of disrespect towards your fellow user.

It doesn't help that gamers have a natural arrogance.

So basically if you support one troll, you support them all. Why even bother to have a topic like this?

To let people be aware of something, it's a reminder.
There are just some characters that have a good personality, but don't often show it and tend to get lost in their posts.

He's noting those people.

I don't understand you're troll theory.
It's illogical.

I put the word troll in quotes, because the people I'm talking about aren't really trolls, or at least have the capacity to not be...
..in fact judging by your post, they come closer to resembling you. Crank much?
If you think everyone is supposed to be lovey-dovey all the time, I'd have to say you're fooling yourself, it ain't gonna happen. Sometimes a little stark reality is warranted, and those I speak of are pretty good at doling it out. I can be a bit of a smart-ass myself from time to time, but I think it's safe to say I'm never malicious. I'm talking about gray areas here, if you think in black and white, you will be disappointed from both sides.
That's my take, I don't think I contradicted myself, but thanks for your input nonetheless. I see where you're coming from, I just think statements like "if you support one troll, you support them all" reek of "throwing the baby out with the bathwater." There are those worth saving.

You know what? I basically don't give a damn.

You're wrong and you're only contradicting this point of this thread. (Not to mention contradicting yourself.)

And guess what kid? People can get along. I'm a user on several message boards, some of them more civil than others.

I came here initially because it seemed that GBAtemp was free of the ususual strife that plagues most web forums. Its been disheartening to watch that civil atmosphere disolve. (I blame gamefaqs.)

I guess I will sit back now and watch the decline.

Did u just call mthrnite a kid?

...

It seems you have issues with GameFAQs and taking it out on GBATemp.
If you didn't give a damn, then why even bother to try and prove your right?

What you're posting is just not relevant.

But you probably don't give a damn.

This really surprised me.
The other "big" forum I'm a regular at is a lot less lax when it comes to asshattery and general idiocy of the population.
I don't think I've ever seen anyone getting banned here for any other reason than requesting roms.

Well.. I agree, people can get along. Of course, if you look closely at our very short conversation here, you'd see yourself belittling me (even though at 43, being called a kid is somewhat refreshing, but I think I know how you meant it.) Telling me in absolutely no uncertain terms that I am wrong. Telling me I'm contradicting my own heartfelt statements, and throwing in an extremely pessimistic statement concerning you "sitting back" while watching the ship go down. You are dealing out definitives to beat the band, which tells me that you and I have a fundamentally different way of looking at the world.

I'm sorry I made you mad, but I think I made you mad because you don't understand me. I've lived long enough to be used to that, but it's still disheartening. I hope you didn't really mean what you said.

I'm sorry if my words hurt but sometimes a person has to stand up and tell the truth. Even if I do suffer the slings and arrows, its well worth it just to speak my mind.

There is an obvious logic to what I said earlier. This topic was started to address the growing hostility on this board. Then a mod comes along and praises certain people for their ability to be curt (rude) and disrespectful towards their fellow users.

But hey as long as those people are good at telling people off, am I right? (

I'll let you guys in on a little secret:

Often, while certainly being a bit harsh, they cut through the bullshit present in any given topic, and serve to wipe the slate and actually get a careening topic back where it's supposed to be.

I'm a big believer in microcosms and macrocosms. This community, like any community, would be dull without the smart-asses and the jokers, and the cranky old men telling you to get off their lawns. The problem I've been having lately with some people, is that while obviously intelligent, they aren't using that intelligence to know when they are dipping into the petty. The petty crap that ruins a thread, the back and forth for no reason that goes on for pages, that's what gets my goat.

I hate to see someone misuse their rapier wit, I just hate it. There is one such person that is very prominent on the board of late, and it just burns me up that they are wasting themselves on petty pissing contests, and contracting warnings at a rate that will eventually result in their shutdown.

I'd elaborate further, but I'm belaboring my point a bit already, plus I have to get my son ready for school. TTFN
I think I know what you're talking about and I agree. I don't come here for a factual and completely bland description of hardware or games. I come for an informative and fun community centered around a topic I love.

There's many times when I've seen a good natured, but smart ass comment save a thread from descending into idiocy or just lighten the mood and give everyone a chuckle. But, I've also left other gaming forums, deciding they were so divisive that there was no point in sticking around. I think the defining factor tends to be whether the person is being a smart ass for the sake of humor or a veering topic, or if they're just trying to be mean-spirited and aggressive and how well they're able to communicate those intentions. I think there's a difference between sarcasm and disrespect. It all comes down to tone, which is a hard thing to define.

@Pigwooly: You hit the nail on the head, baby!

@JohnDrake: Oh, you're letting me have the last word?.... Excellent!.. very gentlemanly of you.

I'm satisfied to rest on my laurels, basking in the warm glow of your beacon.

..and don't worry about my ego, my wife took it with her when she left.

... that's a joke, son.

To everybody else. I was most certainly not condoning trolling. I was merely stating that there's a lot of people on this board that I admire that aren't at first glance the most warm-hearted folk, but when you peel back a layer, they really are good people. I'll even give an example:

Hello cruddybuddy! lollerboogie!

I'll go a step further and say that since we are a community, we will have people of different creeds and religions and yes, viewpoints. Far from merely tolerating them, if you actually take the opportunity to try to understand them, you may still disagree with them, but you also might have learned something in the process. I have religious friends that I talk to all night long, and enjoy myself immensely, even though the thought of what they proffer as truth is, on it's surface, ridiculous to me. It's only by delving into their reasoning that I see the fullness of what they're saying, and even though I still don't agree, I don't write them off as lunatics for believing what they do. Since this board is decidedly not just about gaming, I'm happy to have lots of opportunities to understand concepts foreign to me.

What my initial post was about, was etiquette, reading the rules, cluttering up the board, and a special surprise that's coming down the pike later this month. Take me as you will though, just know that I love this place, and will not desert it.

Oh, and a special hello to Qpido, I miss you around here my brother. Rest assured, "the issue" is not an issue with me, if you know what I'm talkin' about. If you don't know what I'm talkin' about, PM me.

I always use the report button. This place is very well moderated and a mod will listen to you if you get warned and fix it if their is something wrong about it (Thank you Costello
wink.gif
).

After saying that, it will be my 1 year anniversary of me being in this wonderful community soon (3 days to be exact)

If pirating a DS required patching a ROM (like back in the old days
tongue.gif
), their would be much less childish people on this site spamming it up.
