Do you even have the game? Have you ever played a Castlevania before? It's been this way on every one since Castlevania 1 on the NES.
I tried hitting the walls according to one of the guide pictures on Gamefaqs. It didn't work, so I guess I was hitting the wrong wall or something.

When you're using a portal, and rapidly changing the cursor from one place to another, then it will freeze.
I've tested this, and its 100% failing all the time, unless I move the cursor "slowly"..
Does it fail for anyone else aswell?
