Suggestion It's been a good number of months now: will we EVER get GIF avatars back?

A lot of users had GIFs for avatars in the previous versions of the Temp. You know, the simple, repeating kind, no screamers or anything like that.
That all disappeared when the Temp went XenForo-powered, and we never got to know if it's returning.

So... will it return?

it's because you uploaded a picture that isn't exactly the right size for avatars, so it got resized.
And resizing converts to .JPG (a still image).
I'm just wondering: if you upload a file of the right size, does XF still try to "resize" the image, or does it display it as is ? (as gif)

I used my Kuro pic
kurotemp.gif

This thing is way small, correct me if I'm wrong but i'm sure this never got resized and it didnt work for me on the forums when I set it

yeah it isnt working now either, just tried...
it cant be getting resized, its 100 pixels smaller than the limit on both width and length

As I test I made a few GIFs 96x96 in size, 200x200 in size and 192x192 in size.
The first is how they appear in the forum for me, 200x200 is the suggested size in the avatar uploader and 192x192 is the size of the preview window in the uploader.

They play at various points though all seem to be made into JPG for the posts, my current one is the 192x192 one which does not play in the forum but if you click on the user's name to get the profile mini overlay. I will leave this one up for a few hours (it is quite literally a 5 frame animation of black and white inverting).

As for the matter at hand GIF images are fine but I often found a few people ruined it for everybody and had GIF sequences to the tune of several megabytes. Granted that can and does still happen in signatures but hey.

On the other hand we do not call me to make things look pretty so I will take myself out of the discussion as far as that goes.

Oh please make things look pretty; please. You're the perfect techromancer to do it. :)

And I suppose someone else could figure out how to keep the GIFs from turning into JPEGs once they get set as an avatar.

From what I know, they'll turn into JPG no matter what. The only way around I've heard of is installing a plugin.

Since it's apparently such a pain to make such a thing possible, couldn't someone just write a userscript that changes the avatar from the preview mode (gbatemp.net/data/avatars/m/X/XYZ/Numbers.jpg?MoreNumbers) to the full view mode (gbatemp.net/data/avatars/l/XYZ/Numbers.jpg?MoreNumbers), and then zoom/adjust the image to the 96x96 frame for every post?

That would take no additional loading toll on the user or the Temps servers without the user activating it by themselves.
