basically, i soft modded my wii a few months ago, played some games, added the usb loader all that other fun stuff.

then life came up, and i havnt touched the wii since.

Now i want to play some newer games, but to do that, i need to let my wii update itself, im still running 3.2u.

theres alot of great guides for people just getting started, but not for people who already have something on their system, and are woried that applying new patches on top of it might cause issues.

Use Waninkoko's 4.1 updater. Also make sure you have BootMii, just as a precaution, as Preloader will be removed after the update(you can reinstall though)

Yeah, i've been looking around the forums at other things and found bootmii, and thought it would be a good idea to make the backup.

Ive got an SD card formatting now for the backup.

where is the 4.1 updater though? Also, which of the loaders is currently recommended? I still have to load the file from the homebrew channel, but there seems to be some that stand alone quite well.

also, assuming that i do somehow blow up my wii, how will i get back into bootmii to restore from my backup? i have it installed as a boot 2. I'm guessing its the "/bootmii/bootmii.ini" file you put on your sd card to make it work, but i like to ask people who have done this a few times before.

====

edit nevermind, i see that if my backup is in there, it will automatically load its own menu.

good to know.

I STRONGLY recommend USB Loader GX. If you haven't been on the scene in a while, you'll be blown away by that bad boy. And yes, BootMii can restore your NAND if you somehow screw up your Wii.

You need the whole bootmii folder, not just the INI. Bootmii.ini just contains settings you can change. Edit in notepad or use the Bootmii Configuration Editor app for wii to do that.

Bootmii as boot2 will run at boot up and provides the best protection currently available. Just restart the wii and it should show up.

As per Chaos Punk's recommendation, use USB Loader GX. I was really skeptical that a 3rd party app would do better than the official Wanin release. Once I installed it, i regretted not installing it earlier.

GX has a forwarder channel available for it so it can launch from the system menu like any regular channel. It just runs the DOL on the SD.

BTW: No need to format the SD for the NAND Backup - just ensure you have at least 540MB free, and that Bootmii Beta 2 is installed (Beta 1 requires you format). Most dumps are 528MB, but i've seen a few that were 540MB. When making the dump, do NOT skip the verify or the dump is useless.

Meh, I don't recommend USB Loader GX. Why? Because it will highly get code dumps while using this loader. I recommend Loadstructor (link: http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=153471) or oggzee's Configurable USB Loader (link: http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=147638).

No it doesn't, and there's about 4 updates EVERY DAY. You'll rarely get code dumps now, most of the time it's only for the experimental features such as downloading ocarina files and customizing them in the loader without ever taking the card out. That kind of thing is expected to code dump when it was first implemented, but now it works fine.
