i dont know if this has been proposed before, but this has been in my mind for like the longest time.
why dont they make something like mmorpg for the ds or heck, any of other game sysyems and make it mostly online.
i mean u can use the mic to voicechat, or just type to talk to ppl.

im pretty sure nintendo can keep a server without any problem-who doesnt want to play mmorpg with other ppl on ur ds?

i think it would awesome if it happens

has anyone other than me thought of this? or is it just stupid idea? or is it just not possible?

plz dont bash

The first problem would be the processor limitations of the DS itself.
The second would be that nobody is going to produce a mostly-online DS game when 60-75% (a guess) of DS users don't even have a viable internet connection to use with their DS.

This simply won't happen commercially any time soon.

...however somebody might try to make a homebrew of the concept.

really...
id ds's processor that weak? arg.. what about for like... psp or wii? i think they have the capability to do that
oh! what about dsi?

i think more than 40% of all the ds users have wifi.. yet, what do i know?

homebrew of that sort... but how many ppl, out of those who have wifi, have a flashcard and is willing to look it up?

Ragnarok DS??

EDIT
Vulpes is right about the processors speed 67MHz and 33MHz combined they amount to less than my mobile phone. However you can if you have smarts compensate for that by doing more work on the server side.

A) I think the DS runs at 66 mhz typically
B) Couldn't say. I have neither.
C) It does have better processors. A DSi exclusive game isn't going to be popular here for at least three years.
D) That was a guess, but I'm estimating based on all the DS users I happen to know.

There was a thread about this some time ago in the Homebrew section.
Long story short, it's not possible.

MMORPG you say... how MM are we talking? The DS could handle some simple top-down isometric graphics, something like Dofus, and (maybe) up to 8 player characters per dungeon/map/level/location simultaneously. Probably. But nothing actually massive. That's just co-op multiplayer.

Processor is not a problem, the DS could handle a MMO.. but I doubt there would be enough people interested in playing it so that would compensate to maintain a server.

Most people buy a portable system for quick games, not for online games

I was thinking of something similar to that. Something that can communicate between different consoles using Wi-Fi, like DS with PSP with Wii with PS3 with Xbox 360 with PC. I know there's a bunch of homebrew like DSOrganize with IRC, but I want something unstandard and retail. There's DGamer that comes with any recent Disney DS game, but that's DS only, kinda close to what I was thinking.

Maple Story is not at all a MMO :

QUOTE said:
Will it actually be an MMO-type thing?
SL: You mean MapleStory DS? It's not an MMORPG kind of game. It's a typical kind of action role-playing game. It will have fairly different gameplay compared to the original version. It will be specifically adapted to the platform itself.

So more local play than networked play?
SL: Right. Single-player. We have some features that support multiplayer, but the main feature will focus on single player.

The Nintendo DS is not powerful enough for a MMO game but it's also because it doesn't even support 802.11g !
(802.11g allow a max data rate of 54 Mbit/s, it's 5 times more than 802.11b...)
