SuperModel NX
Sega Model 3 emulator for Nintendo Switch

SuperModel NX is a port of Supermodel, the Sega Model 3 arcade emulator, to the Nintendo Switch. It runs as a homebrew app (.nro) with its own game list, settings menu and a PowerPC recompiler fast enough to play most Model 3 games at full speed.

Features

Emulation
  • PowerPC recompiler (JIT): built for the Switch's ARM CPU, with exact CPU timing like the original interpreter.
  • Analog gun games (The Lost World, Ocean Hunter, LA Machineguns): playable with the left stick, with automatic gun calibration for The Lost World.
  • Force feedback: racing games use the controller's vibration.
  • NVRAM: saved per game, so cabinet settings and high scores are kept.

Menus
  • Game list: shows the games found in your ROMs folder, with cover art next to the list (your own pictures).
  • Settings menu: resolution, PowerPC frequency, video and audio options. Per-game settings are kept in Supermodel.ini.
  • Pause menu: press − and + during a game to Save State, Load State, Exit to the game list or Cancel.
  • Save states: 10 slots per game (hold − and press D-pad right to change the slot).

Default controls
  • + / −: Start / Coin
  • Left stick, D-pad: joystick, steering
  • ZR / ZL: accelerate / brake, fire
  • R / L: shift up / down
  • A B X Y: game buttons
  • Left / right stick click: Service / Test
  • − and +: pause menu

Installation: copy supermodel.nro to sdmc:/switch/supermodel/ and your ROMs (MAME-style zips) to sdmc:/switch/supermodel/ROMs/. The other folders are created on the first launch.

Feedback and bug reports are welcome. If a game has problems, please attach your Supermodel.log (in sdmc:/switch/supermodel/Log/).

Support
This emulator is completely free and open-source. Optional donations to support the development are always welcome:

Will optimisations be possible? Getting 45 FPS on max pc.

Would save states be possible too? It's amazing work. I also sent you PayPal, the bounty I posted in the bounty thread 😘👍

Thank you very much for your contribution!
I still need to optimize the code to get better performance.
Which game are you having this issue with?

You can try lowering the CPU frequency in the General tab depending on the type of game.

That makes a huge difference.

I want to thank you very very much for getting this project going!
I forked it and spent time to narrow down the audio crackling issue. After that I did several passes to optimize performance.
Here is the link to my fork.

I also want to remind everyone that this wouldn't be possible without all of Tonii's hard work.

I appreciate the improvements you've made to the application.
I've uploaded version 1.2.1 to my repo with your collaboration!

SuperModel NX 1.3.0 is out!

New: game covers

The main menu now shows the cover of the selected game next to the list.
Covers are not included: put your own pictures in sdmc:/switch/supermodel/Covers/, named after the ROM set like the zip (e.g. daytona2.png, scud.jpg). PNG or JPEG, any size. Clones use their parent's cover automatically.

Menu improvements
  • Settings tabs now fill the full width of the screen.
  • Cleaner game list: TITLE, ROM NAME and VERSION. The CPU speed is still set automatically for each game's board (Core → Auto).
  • Slightly smaller font in the list, so all the columns fit.
  • Column headers can no longer be selected with the controller.

Also included (since 1.2.1)
Big thanks to Thorhax for his audio and performance work: crackle-free sound, no more render stutter, and Scud Race now holds 60 FPS in races.

As always, no ROMs, NVRAM data or covers are included: provide your own. Launch in title mode (hold R while opening a game).

Feedback and bug reports are welcome. If something doesn't work, please attach your Log/Supermodel.log.

Many thanks to the developers of this emulator for all your hard work. I really enjoy the games on Model 3, but I’ve run into a small issue: the hotkeys configured in the .ini file won’t save or load save states.非常感谢这款模拟器的开发者们所付出的所有努力。我非常喜欢Model 3上的游戏,但遇到了一个小问题:.ini文件中配置的快捷键无法保存或加载存档状态。

Some people have been reporting bugs to me, since this is your project I'll wait pass the information.
I mostly wanted to play Scud race at full speed without any issues and I achieved that, so I haven't touched anything since.
If you want me to help, I'm happy to continue supporting but I thought it best to give you the information before I look into anything.

These issues are reported to still exist in your latest build.

Reports:
Some games were pretty slow like Harley Davidson and Spikeout while Emergency Call ran decent speeds.
Star Wars Trilogy Arcade game and Jurrasic Park: The Lost World refused to bootOcean Hunter works but crosshair didn't work.

I still need to post some emulator updates. I'll note down the bugs and look into them!

Thanks

Can the model 3 play the arcade verion of house of the dead 1 & II?
House of the Dead is Model 2.
House of the Dead 2 is Naomi. Flycast the Dreamcast emulator can play Naomi games. You just need the naomi.zip bios from google.com to play them.

For anyone else wondering, here's the full Sega Model 3 game list:

I tested The Lost World and it doesn't boot, Star Wars boots but gives me an error that I think can be fixed by messing with the cabinet settings but I don't know how to access them.
Press the right stick when booting up games to access the Dip switch settings.
