The original Xbox has had a cold boot software hack since... checks notes... July 2003. It was literally hacked before I was born.

Or if you mean "custom firmware" in a literal sense (flashing the BIOS of the motherboard itself), this has been known to be possible on most Xboxes for a similar amount of time. Recently, even the 1.6 model's flash ROM inside the proprietary Xyclops IC has been discovered to be flashable through its TTL interface: https://www.xbox-scene.info/forums/topic/804-xyclomod-flash-the-on-board-bios-on-v16/
Wow the 1.6 is flashable? I didn't think that was even possible. I thought it was stored in ROM and couldn't be flashed. That's really cool.

AWESOME! My 360 Elite has had a broken disc drive for a few years so I was SOL for a few years. Didn't want to JTAG the poor thing.

Only the A-B01 variant of the Xyclops chip you cannot flash. The A-A02 is supported. Guessing that's some closed weak point by instead removing the ability to write to the chip?

Yes. 32GB or less is supported, however, larger sizes may need to be formatted with FAT32Format. I'd honestly stick with a 16GB USB which is what I've used.
I ask that because I dont have usb stick, only hdd that are actually unused. Also if you know, do I need that usb/hdd after the installation or do I need to keep it plugged ?

I haven't checked yet but I think you won't need it after installation.

I remember hacking the xbox with a kamikaze technique where i disconnect the hdd while the console still on ,plug it on a ide cable on a pc ,launching the hack, then reconnect the hdd to the xbox still on.This was 20 years ago.How time flies...

Who cares about stock? you people always find negative aspect of things.Live service is gone, whats the point of stock?
Some people do like to choose, no-one can force others to stick to a modded system as they do like to retain how it came originally.

But personally, considering the 360 marketplace and Live services are all gone, I do still recommend a modded system just because you can get more out of it.

in 20 years ,a 90 million copy sale console in stock state that cant read jack shit must be worth a lot...

The Kamikaze hack involved drilling a hole on a certain chip at a certain location, on the pcb board of the disk drive. This would break a trace/ connection and allow backups to be read. Here is the drill kit:
