There's so many Switch 1 games sold without the box that it feels weird, but some throw the box simply because they don't care about it and/or it takes space.

And I used to think that was a thing we were through in the 90's with SNES and N64 games (as they were cardboard boxes).

Switch 2 games are heading the same way.

When I got my gameboy colour, I assumed the game boxes were trash since they were paper, my previous consoles, mega drive and Playstation had hard boxes so it was obviously not trash. I am still upset at how many boxes young me threw away. <.<

Needless to say, after I was older I never threw away any box, only GBA boxes I do have however are for games I got more recently (well, before covid, mint games like ZoE Fist of Mars, Final Fantasy 1&2, Boktai and Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance) not to mention several others that aren't mint.
Even then most of the GBA games I manage to get lack a box unfortunately.

Well, while not GBA, I do have several hundreds of games for other platforms (While not a lot compared to many people, I do have around 100 or so for the Switch).

I have relatively few physical games as I've played on PC for the longest time, and digital distribution has been so dominant for so long. The Switch games I have I keep the cases of, however I may need to start getting rid of them eventually. I know there's a used market for just the cases, so I know people value them and I definitely wouldn't dispose of them.

I like my cases, really. If I had more space, I'm sure I'd keep all cases for as long as I could. But still, having a card holder is much more efficient considering how unnecessarily big Switch cases are (why not stick to the cute 3DS format?), so the cases feel purely decorative to me.

I thought about 3DS cases for Switch games too, I am surprised Etsy sellers haven't started doing it (it'd end up pretty expensive to buy for all your carts).

For me I wouldn't buy game without the case, it just doesn't feel complete. I seen listing of people selling game without the case, but most of the listing out there like on ebay are with the case.

The cases are an important part of the experience for me. I'm not really a fan of standardised designs though I get why they do it.

I still miss physical PC releases.

I see it as the same low iq lazy move people started doing back in the late 80s into the 90s with audio CDs. People would buy these cases with the liner notes and other info and just throw them out like a cardboard box should be as outer packing and just toss the CD into one of those zipper/fold over sleeve things. They're convenient and save space, but often they contribute to damaging the discs with scratches as well. I see the same dumb logic being applied these days with Switch 1 and 2 games in this era of most things having no paper in the box (manual etc) so they rationalize it as trash like the cardboard which is utterly wrong (like with CDs.)

Given how easy to lose and tiny the games are I see no reason to throw the cases away ever, and while far bigger than the game card/key cards are, they still eat up relatively little space so it just feels neglectful and dumb tossing them out. It doesn't help when you look online and see ebay solds and games with and without the case are pretty close in price where you can usually get a replacement case/art for like $5 plus shipping roughly speaking in a lot of cases which is sad as it encourages it.

I bought some games without a case, but in that instance they were very cheap so it's understandable.

As for CDs without cases... I hate that one, the back cover tells you the tracks the disc has and that's extremely important so you can look for the specific track you want and play it! You can look it up online although it's preferable to have the physical case. My older sister has like 3 or 4 disc storage cases and I don't think she ever used them again after using YouTube and Spotify.
