GameStop hikes refurbished PS5 Pro price to $1399.99, above MSRP

Amidst the shortages, possibly fueled by the upcoming release of GTA VI, GameStop is reportedly raising the price of refurbished PS5 Pro consoles from $800 to $1399.99 USD, so now they cost more than a brand-new one at ticket price.

Supposedly, a Redditor who works at the retailer leaked a memo telling employees that used consoles priced above new ones is intentional.

Due to the ongoing chip shortages and with Tom's Hardware citing a 500% rise in RAM prices over the past 12 months; new PS5 Pro's are hard to come by so this just appears to be GameStop cashing in. It also suggests demand is being pushed up by Grand Theft Auto VI, which launches this November.

If you just want a PlayStation, the standard PS5 Digital and Disc editions are said to still be selling at or close to MSRP.

Would you ever pay above asking price for a used console, or is this just a poor look for GameStop?

I suppose the question now is: can Rockstar beat the emulation scene to GTA6 on PC? As far as motivation goes this is the perfect storm... for both contestants.

Maybe the frame rate can run higher on it.

CeX are greedy and not worth buying from, unless you have vouchers to use.

Most of the time their controllers, consoles, and game cases are dirty and that could be fixed by using wipes to clean the dirt off of them... But no, they don't do that.

Yup, that's exactly how I feel. If I had the money, my plan literally would've been to get a PS5, make a new account for the game, beat it (not 100%, unless?), and sell it along with the account. It's not how I roll at all, I'm not a fan of selling so quickly nor do I feel fondly about flipping, but indeed, I'd have absolutely nothing else to use it for.
 
You just know they're immediately opening up any new ones they get to sell at the higher used price, too.

I assume they'll release the PC version almost exactly one year later, but given how fast PS5 emulation/translation layer projects are moving now, pirates may have it running full speed on PC before then.

GTA6 both for this industry and for the consumers is less a release and more passing stool after the constipation of a lifetime.
