I wanted to play my Ultra Sun save file on my PC some times and tried transferring it but im having problems getting anything to work.

Steps taken:

1. Saved game on Ultra Sun and closed game.
2. Opened Checkpoint, backed up my Ultra Sun save file
3. Removed SD and plugged into PC
First option
4. Copied the save file titled "main" with no extension to the directory where Citra saves 3ds games on my PC and left it as is. I Figured it wouldnt work but I tried anyway. I opened retroarcha nd loaded up game in Citra core. It started as it it were a brand new game.

Second option
5. After that, I re-coped my "main" save file from the SD card to the 3ds save directory for retro arch and renamed it the exact same name as the rom it uses, 'Pokemon Ultra Sun (USA) (En,Ja,Fr,De,Es,It,Zh,Ko)' with no extension. Then opened retro arch, loaded up rom and core again and still the same thing. I even manually tried to load the save file but nothing happend.

Third option
6. So my next attempt, I re-copied the "main" save file again to the correct directory and renamed it according to the rom except added an .srm extension to the save for this try so the copied save file was, 'Pokemon Ultra Sun (USA) (En,Ja,Fr,De,Es,It,Zh,Ko).srm'. Loaded retro arch, rom and core. Still didnt work.

Last Option
7. For my last attempt i again re-copied "main" ave file to correct directory and renamed it to the roms name but added a .state extension to it this time. Opened retro arch and tried loading rom and game again but it again started up as a new game. I tried manually loading save file as well which resulted in the same.

**I want to also add a maybe important note: I have a Pokemon X save file that i started on my PC and have only played on my PC. The save file for Pokemon X is saved with the same name as the ROM and no extension. Thats why the second thing i tried was renaming my main save file to Pokemon Ultra Sun (USA) (En,Ja,Fr,De,Es,It,Zh,Ko) with no extension and placed in the same folder where retroarch places the 3DS citra saves (right next to the Pokemon X save file) but that didnt work. Thats what really baffled me. I was sure that was how it was supposed to work.

What is the appropriate method, if any, of using a save file exported with checkpoint on my PC to play with retroarch or Citra. Is retroarch making it all difficult? Should i just use Citra standalone? Or is there something else going on? Any input, recommendations, and help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time in advance.

The general way of doing something like this is to create new save data in whatever emulator you are trying to use, look for the file where it stores its save data, and then overwrite that file with the file you want to use. I don't know why you're trying to rename everything.

Does your backed-up save file open correctly in pkhex?

Does new save data created by your emulator open correctly in pkhex?

I would love to not have to rename everything but unfortunately thats just how some things have to work lol. You do realize that even your recommendation of overwriting that file is essentially just renaming the backup file right lol? Whatever method ends up working there is absolutely no escaping the fact the the file named main has to be and will be renamed to whatever it will be as its final name. But i already know what it is supposed to be named and I already know exactly where it is supposed to be saved. It is supposed to be named the same as the rom file and is supposed to be stored at "C:\RetroArch-Win64\saves\Citra".

Thats why i had added the note in bold at the end of post. I play a Pokemon X save on Retroarch currently. The Pokemon X save file is named Pokemon X (USA) (En,Ja,Fr,De,Es,It,Ko) (with no extension) and its saved to "C:\RetroArch-Win64\saves\Citra" which is where the save files for all the other 3DS rom's I play are saved as well.

Thats why the first thing i tried after attempting playing the file 1:1 with no changes was renaming it to match the rom's name and placed it in the same folder as the Pokemon X save file and the other save files from 3DS games i play in retroarch. But it just did not work, and that very same file opens fine in pkhex. Its the same file I most recently/last backed up with checkpoint on the 3DS.

Forgoing renaming would be great and make things easier most likely but I didnt design it this way and it has to be renamed. Retroarch doesn't use the 'main' save files with no extension. I wish it did then I wouldnt have this problem. It simply has to be renamed even if I'm creating a new save file then saving over that with my backed up file from 3DS it is still simply just renaming the 3DS' main file so theres no escaping renaming it. You literally have to because thats the way it works lol.

Yes it opens correctly in PKHeX. I've edited it multiple times and saved it back to SD and ro loaded it to 3DS multiple times and played it after on the 3DS. I even opened it in pkhex after renaming it, failing to play it in retro arch, then changing it back
