Little update on this since I finally got everything cleaned up enough to actually release it
Repo is public now:
https://github.com/dexifried/dsi-sgip-fastpath
v0.1.0 is tagged, patch builds clean, CI passes, and I’ve tested it on my actual DSi including from a full cold boot
Also I wanna clear something up about the 3 MiB/s number I posted originally
That number wasn’t fake or anything, but after actually instrumenting the hell out of this I realized it was measuring the hottest part of the DSi receive loop on short transfers, not sustained end to end TCP throughput
The sustained numbers are still kinda nuts though
Final v0.1 stack, 3 runs of 16 MiB each direction:
PC -> DSi: 1.4165 MiB/s average
DSi -> PC: 0.9258 MiB/s average
Full duplex at the same time: 1.1208 MiB/s aggregate
That was 192 MiB of timed traffic total
The DSi -> PC side especially was absolutely horrible before this. I was getting around 0.049 MiB/s originally, so it’s roughly 19x faster now
I also fully shut the DSi off afterwards, booted the exact same build again through the DSi Camera SD card method, and reran it just to make sure none of this depended on some weird warm wifi state
Cold boot results were:
PC -> DSi: 1.2141 MiB/s
DSi -> PC: 0.8380 MiB/s
Duplex: 1.1192 MiB/s aggregate
So yeah, definitely reproducible
The patch ended up being a lot more than just increasing some buffers too. There’s proper TX pipelining now, fast retransmit, ACK/retry fixes, receive window fixes, less copying on RX, etc
And the nice part is you don’t need some special API for it. Patch dswifi, rebuild it, then your normal socket/send/recv stuff just uses it
I also kept the Calico/Atheros PHY stuff separate because stuff like forcing 48 Mbps is obviously gonna depend on your router and RF environment
All the raw benchmark data is in the repo too, including the shitty runs lol. I didn’t wanna just cherry pick the best number and call it a day
There’s still more I wanna mess with, especially full duplex and some TX coalescing stuff I’ve been testing, but I think v0.1 is finally at the point where other people can actually try it without me having to say “yeah but use this random test build from my PC”
If anyone here has a DSi homebrew project that moves a lot of data over wifi I’d genuinely love to see what results you get on different routers/hardware setups
