As more and more online and in person services utilize 3rd party ID verification tools, the potential for breaches and realized theft of private information has increased rapidly.
This past week, a website on the darkweb known as Nexus began offering scans of US and Canadian driver's licenses for a small fee. The database is extensive featuring over 150 million IDs including that of the US Minister of defense Pete Hegseth.
The website quickly vanished after an FBI investigation began, but the data will continue to be traded and will lead to cases of identity theft. The theft of this data also has important implications for stalking and harassment as knowledge of a real name of an American or Canadian is sufficient to buy an ID which lists their legal address.
