The Witcher News: a recap of everything in the works

There's a lot going on with The Witcher right now. Four projects are in the works, and one of them has just been put on hold. Here's where everything stands, closest release first.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered - September 29th
It's a free upgrade if you already own the game, and base game owners also get Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine for free. You also get reworked combat, new sign effects, better horse handling, transmog, a new skill tree and new finishers.
Songs of the Past - 2027
This is the first new Witcher 3 expansion since Blood and Wine in 2016, and this one is paid. It takes place in a new region called Letten, and it adds new abilities and a chain weapon. It's being made mostly by Fool's Theory, not by CDPR. We only got a short first look at gamescom, so 2027 is all we know (no pricing announced yet either).
The Witcher 4 - 2028
Ciri is the main character this time, and over 500 people are working on it. CDPR gave the 2028 window just before gamescom, and said in the same breath that the game wouldn't be shown there at all. It's the first of three games they want to release in six years. It's also the game that will set the standard for The Witcher in Unreal Engine 5, now that RED Engine is being dropped.
The Witcher 1 remake (Canis Majoris) - no date, and now on hold
Announced in 2022 and given to Fool's Theory. CD Projekt told GameSpot yesterday that it's parked for now.

That last one is the real news of the week. Here's what CD Projekt said:

Fool's Theory team is focused mainly on the development of Witcher 3: Songs of the Past, while a relatively small part of their team is supporting the development of The Witcher 4. As we have previously announced, the development on The Witcher Remake has been temporarily integrated with The Witcher 4 due to production process dependencies.

So the remake is waiting on The Witcher 4 to sort the engine out. And the studio that's supposed to build it is busy with the expansion. There's still no release window, and if it comes after everything above, 2029 sounds optimistic.

Funnily enough, the guys who actually made The Witcher 3 left CDPR years ago and founded their own studio, Rebel Wolves. They released The Blood of Dawnwalker today, and it's sitting at 83 on Metacritic. They got a whole new RPG out before CDPR got its next Witcher out.
