UDPATE: clean signals are possible. More investigation necessary. Comparisons below

All (non-photo) captures are 422 (yuy2), captured with NZXT Signal HD60.

In conclusion:
  • I have spend too much time on this and I definitely am getting crazy

  • Native Wii U signal is clean (hooray)

  • Scaled Wii U signal (excl. vWii) has issues on some devices (including LG OLEDS apparently...). But not all devices!

  • OSSC Pro in SCALER mode might have problems with vertical blending

  • vWii mode has horrible chroma shift regardless (but we knew that already)

Why these issues with the native 720p Wii U signal present on my TV and my capture card is not clear to me. What are the odds these devices both have scaler issues? Surely there are some others with LG OLED who could test this.

Questions
  • Could the scaling issues for the Wii U (on some devices) still be caused by the signal the Wii U sends out?

  • If so, might this have something to do with the (same?) issues on vWii mode?

After spending a couple of days trying to get vWii as good looking as possible with the OSSC Pro, I thought I was going crazy when I started seeing issues on the Wii U as well  ...but I don't think my eyes are lying here. The issues are present with or without OSSC Pro.

Always found it weird that there seemed to be some kind of sharpening (halo effect) going on in the Wii U. Still don't really understand why these chroma / vertical shift issues would even be present on what is supposed to be a native/unscaled resolution.

It's pointless to point a camera at a TV. They process in YCbCr 4:2:2 in their default mode.

There. I wasted 5 minutes on your stupid nonsense.
I'm aware camera's capture in 422. Fortunately my eyes don't.

Could also be your Tvs Sharpening and contrast settings ... contrast magnifying overhsharpening situation ....

All filters are disabled. Sharpening set to 0 as well. I'm not aware of severe scaling issues with LG OLEDs, but might just not be documented.

I'm testing some more output combinations currently. Completely unscaled, 720 > 720, images seem without issues. I'll look more into it.

I've now tested almost all combinations that are within my reach. It is possible to obtain a clean signal, but it depends on the device. Unfortunately, the devices that display issues include LG OLED. The only device I found that scales cleanly is the OSSC Pro.

More testing is necessary to determine if changing the settings on the C2 could resolve the problems I am seeing. The current results are from using PC mode (meaning it should be in 444 RGB).

I'm going to try setting the TV to regular mode (which should be 422) to see if this changes anything.
